I have been getting a lot of homework done for my brother who drew this tag and i am just getting him into hunting, he has never hunted elk before and with him drawing nevada early rifle 111-115 elk tag i think he will be hooked for life after this hunt! My question is to anyony who knows Mt Moriah at all, do you think its worth hitting hard compared to going to the east shell range? I know there is plenty of elk on the east shells so i have that for back up, but Mt Moriah i dont think will get hit as hard and i have horses to get away from all the hunters as best i can, i am just curious to see if i can find anyone on here with an opinion on hunting Mt moriah!! Thanks in advance if any opinions

Dont know the East Shell range but I did hunt 111-115 archery elk hunt in 2010 with a guide. We spent time in 3 areas. One area north west of McGill, one area south of Ely where you turn off and there is jail/nevada prison up a way on a dirt road that you pass and Mt Moriah. Dont know about elk being there for early rifle but boy were they there for archery. I couldnt believe how abundant the elk were especially bulls. You know its going to be a great elk hunt when you see more bulls than bucks on a unit.

As far as Mt Moriah goes the place was screaming with them all over the place. I missed a 60 yard shot at a 375 class bull and was within 20 yards of thick stuff of the bull that got ultimately killed by the Nevada governor tag holder that year. In-fact he shot him the morning after the archery hunt ended with a rifle (shooting ducks).

Here is the link for the gov bull-

I hate to ruin your story but the gov tag bull from 2010 did not come off of Mt. Moriah. They've even got the tag holders name wrong on the attached link.

In regards to the original posters question, I think you're still going to see as much pressure on Moriah as you are anywhere else on the hunt. Those bulls move alot between the rut and the late rifle hunts. Anywhere you go you should have a great hunt, they've already killed some monster bulls over there this year.

that made me sad!! lol thats ok i here there are some great bulls in this unit just also heard the east shells gets a ton of pressure so i was told to hunt the east side of mt moriah because its not as popular, thanks so much for your opinions guys

LAST EDITED ON Oct-18-12 AT 11:02AM (MST)[p]No I know for a fact that the 2010 bull was killed on Mt Moriah. I had an archery elk tag and was being guided by Western Wildlife. second to last day we spotted the bull and couldn't get him to come in to our calls. My guide, Nate, out of Ely told the gov tag holder and his guide on the mtn while I sat in the truck about the bull and that he was over 400. They asked if I was going to hunt him the next day- I didn't. Day after archery hunt ended they smoked it with a rifle.

Facts are facts and I was there.

The link you posted of Jeremy Page's elk did not come from moriah. We, Timberline, were there, Nate wasn't. Sure it wasn't other gov tag? Jay

Nate was on Moriah working for Mossback as my guide. The 2010 gov tag elk was killed on Moriah. The bull on your 2010 kill pics is a twin I guess of the one we hunted and the one that was shot the day after the archery hunt ended by the Nevada state gov tag holder. He'll Doyle was sending in other guys that had tags to smoke the bull but didn't quite make it.

Facts are facts.

Personally I dont know why the he!! people want to lie about where a gov tag bull was taken but I know that Nate and I saw this bull (the one on Boone and Crockett and Timberlines sites) on Mt. Moriah and we tried once for it to no avail. We spent the last day back over by Ely. Nate told a guy in a pickup truck, a mile from where the bull ultimately met his demise with the lone rifle hunter heck lone hunter for that case, about the bull. That same party shot the bull.

You put two and two together.

No need for me to put two and two together, I WAS THERE. Maybe you should talk to Nate, or better yet, have Nate talk to me. Then maybe he can explain. Nothing to hide, no reason to lie, the bull is dead, been dead for a couple years now. Jay

Last post for me on the subject. Like you said the bull is dead and it was a great trophy for your client for sure.

I know for a fact that bull was killed on Mt Moriah because that is where it lived when it was shot Sep 15, 2010 by the gov tag holder. Nate told you guys about the bull and YOU asked if I was going to hunt it anymore. Hell we had two trucks, yours and Nates, right above the ridge where the bull was and where you shot him, when Nate was talking with you about the bull.

Nate and another Mossback spotter called Doyle and told him about the bull. They thought about sending up a tag holder from Vegas but it didnt end up coming together.

Again last post but that elk with that unique right side was shot on Moriah plain and simple. Perhaps you want to keep the area a secret I dont know.

You can ask Bull Ridge too.

holy crud i started my first war on monster muley's!! lol hope you guys get that worked out...sounds like some guides on here so i am sure if there are 350 or better bulls on mt moriah i wont be getting any opinions! if that bull was killed on mt moriah then its got some hogs!

No war, just confusion. Moriah is worth a look. Good luck with your hunt. He will probably be hooked like the rest of us.

lol brad you are so dumb...there isnt muskoxen on mt moriah there are ligers everywhere! and i am going to get one...with my governers tag

Boysgonewild, I wish your brother the best of luck. He's going to need it with you as his guide. I know you think you are a great hunter but in reality you just want to fit in with the cool crowd. I know of a guy that killed a one eyed elk on mt moriah last year, he could point you in the right direction. he said the thing was the nuttiest looking elk you've ever seen. I am pretty sure your wife knows the guy, I think his name was Frenchie.....no no that's not it. Frankie!! Yeah thats the guy. Look him up

oh really gasman? thats so funny your username is gasman because i know for a fact you are one gassy SOB!! lol dont you have anything better to do than harrasing me here and everywhere else i go??

Did some more investigating on the subject and realized that the Gov tag holder that took the 400 plus bull on Mt Moriah was not the one guided by Timberline but by Mark Lane (White River Guide Service). Between Jay (Timberline), Nate Hall (Western Wildlife/Mossback), and I we figured it out. Sorry to all for the confusion.

Anyhow this is way old news but again wanted to man up and admit the mistake.

Fyi...Here is the link for the bull Nate and I saw that got smoked by gov tag holder on Moriah by rifle day after archery ended.

(its the first bull that shows up on screen)
