My 13 yr old son was lucky enough to draw a any elk tag in a good unit here in wyoming. Me and his Grandpa took him up for the first couple days of the opener to try for a bull. The first day we were on about 50 head of elk with a couple of nice 6 pts and rag horns. We got within 200 yds of the herd before light and just sat down and waited for legal shooting hr. The biggest bull stood broadside at 250 yds, but we needed 3 more minutes until legal shooting light, my son was ready to pull that trigger but we had to wait. By the time the clock hit "shoot" the bull had moved off around the corner and the rest of the herd had started that way. I wouldn't let him take a shot at the smaller 6 pt as he was walking and was 350 yds off, so that was the morning hunt, no shot but lots of excitment. the rest of the day and evening hunt produced no elk. The next morning and last morning (as school was waiting the next day for him) we decided to hunt near camp. So I took him off the "hill" into an area where elk will move through as they are getting pushed from all the hunters. We got into position to watch both down below and off to our left side, the longest shot would be no more than 250 yds. We weren't there for 5 mins when we could hear elk moving through the timbers to the left of us. Then they just exploded out of the timbers and my boys eyes were as wide as a mack truck. I did a quick look and saw a couple decent bulls in the group. Got him settled down with a solid shot, knowing the elk would move to roughly 150 yds in front of us. I got him to find the bull he wanted and once he moved to a slight quartering away shot I stopped the bull, and he made a great shot. I saw the bull do the jump and kick, with that I knew he was all but done. The bull made it about 125 yds back to the edge of the trees and fell over. He shoots a Winchester .270, 130 grain swift. He was one proud young man at that point! And then he got to experience the work after the hunt with all the boning and packing, but he sure did his fair share of packing!

Congratulations to the young man. This is a hunt he will always remember. Set the bar pretty high, for a first elk. Dang nice bull.

Awesome bull, especially for a first. Very cool. Congrats and enjoy your trophy.

He's doing better than me. I've been hunting bulls in WY all week and haven't pulled the trigger yet. Congrats on a nice bull !
