I origanilly posted earlier in the year under the name "pigbulls" but for some reason I could not log in again under my old name...Any how I just wanted to post a recap of my Dad and I's hunt with McClendon Guid Service.
First off I want to thank my Father for his generosity for taking me along such an incredible ride. I typically am a DIY kinda guy, and dont get many oppurtunities to hunt out of my home state of Oregon due mostly to being a single dad and not having the $ spend on big trips and guides. When we pulled the tags for 9 this year my dad surprised me with a incredible gift by taking us both on a guided hunt with John McClendon and his son Levi.
From the very first night we pulled into camp things just clicked, everything from the bulls screaming behind camp to how well we meshed with both John and levi..I Knew it would be a awsome hunt. Each and everyday was filled with incredible close encounters and so many tough decisions to pass on bulls that I would never in a million years pass on at home. At times I thought Levi was going to gut punch me :) but it was big bull or bust. I didnt have the highest of standards but I was shooting for a 360 plus bull and passed on too many 340 to 350 bulls the first 7 days. On the evening of Day 5 (The day after Dad shot a real nice 345 bull with John) Levi and I passed a nice 340 kinda bull and were just filming at 80 yards when out of no where a hog bull came out of the junipers and put a good old fashiond ass whoopin on the 340 bull and took all his cows and walked off,,absolutely incredible sight. The fight ended 30 yards away and the only shot oppurtunity I had was again at the smaller bull after the fight.
Levi and I hunted our tails off for 10 days and we had so many close calls on bulls over the 360 mark but for one reason or another things just didnt work out, but it definatly wasn't a lack of effort(more my stuborness to shoot nothing below a 360 bull)....Our hunt and our aggrement with John was for a 10 day hunt so Levi had to return to his family and his normal day job.
Now get this,,,if this doesn't show you the caracter of John McClendon then I dont know what will.... Even though our hunt ended after 10 days, and even though he had other hunts going on,,John stayed the remainder 4 days to get the monkey of my back and see our hunt Through till the end,,,NO QUESTIONS ASKED , NO EXTRA $$first class people all the way...
Well true to fasion we were down to the last night of the hunt,,and as I came bouncing to the rig John asked why the high spirits,,,I said this is it,,I have killed too many blacktail bucks on this very same night,,,last night,,,and what a special night it was! as john worked a couple bulls I slipped a arrow in a huge 5 with 10 min of light left in the season! let me tell you that was a long night....
Thank you John and Levi McClendon for the most incredible trip one could ever ask for, but most importantly for a new friendship! It was truly a blessing to meet both of you and your families.
I can honestly say it was the most incredible 14 days I have ever spent in the woods. Not only was it a hunt spent with my 61 year dad but I had mulitiple buddies join us, one flew in from Oregon and another drove up from Phoenix (MUCH NEEDED CAMP COOKS)
Thank you guys!
