Thanks again Bess.
Been going to post but been busy! What a hunt for my son He is still on cloud nine. . After 13 years of putting in he finely drew the tag. A CWMUs tag and we were told we had to wait till the end of Sept. After all the pay hunters! And we are thinking the rut is near done. Not so they came in about when we got there. We were told we only get to hunt 5 days. My son was told he could only have one guest. I give Bobcat a call I can't think of anyone better! Not many guys would drop work play and a hunt to come help out a friend and his son. Bobcat had a Muzzy hunt the day before our hunt well he was there after 5 hr drive the night before the hunt. He knew I had a special charm with the ladies at the eateries and he wanted to be part of it. Not to mention Elk fanatic!
I have hunted this unit and killed a great bull years back. Bobcat knew it well enough! We spent some time hear couple years back on Qtips hunt.
Not being able to scout pre season! Knowing it had been hunted hard by the paying customers. (Mossback kids and a couple others). Who by the way hunted last year for 72 days before they killed. (Not right in my books.) If I would have known this prior I would have had him put in some where else.
Bad thing about this unit the bulls get broken by late season!
So we head out the eve before to look for some elk or sign. After 1 1/2 days of rain. Tracks are scarce but we finely find a rag horn pisscutter. But that was the only elk we seen in a 1/2 day of scouting. Neilo was getting discouraged not finding elk tracks or any bugles in areas we knew there should be elk.
Talking with locals and land owners they said the elk were there early in the summer but not many seen since!
Off for the 2 hr wait for dinner. And to check out the scenery!
First light we go different directions to cover more country. Not much to report a rag horn and a couple spikes not even a cow. Bobcat reports about the same a small six and a tree! He was amazed by this tree so we decided to go check out the tree about dark! We are standing there looking at the tree it looks like a D9 Cat had trashed the tree. We here a bugle of in the distance. We come up with plan for morn a bull in the area and the branches on this tree were broken 8? up it had to be a big bull.
Next morning we catch a heard with a broken 350-360 class heard bull and a couple piss cutters and 8 cows. A couple others in the trees we couldn't get a good look at but they all made the trees before we could move in on them. The bull had #5 and 3 broke. We head out to check out new area?s wanting to go back in the eve to see what we missed. We cut some fresh tracks in the mud and Bess can't find any trees during mid day! So for the eve we head back to the tree. I Neilo and his girl friend are set up on point! When Bobcat tells us he found a cow and calf and a cow this time of year is not by her self so we went to check her out. No cow so we were headed back to our point and busted the heard had come out of the trees after we went past. A good bull but we couldn't get a good look they were back in the trees. So we circled and set up got in close and I cow called a couple times and had a bull come charging in he held up about 75 yds he wouldn't come out of the trees. Neilo was ready to kill but couldn't see the back end of bulls horns. I am thinking 300-320 class. I knew it wasn?t the heard bull because he was with the cows and I had seen him. But after telling Neilo not to shoot and the bull turned his head Neilo seen the whale tail and that is when buck fever set in! Never killing an elk if he would have had time he would had shot. The bull was gone and Neilo had itchy finger something terrible. We catch up with Bobcat and trade stories. And it is back to camp Bates Motel.
Come first light we catch the Broken Bull out in the open now almost every point is gone or broke. He was now a spike. We are heading to have lunch thought we would check out the tracks we found the day before. We heard a couple bulls making a bunch of racket so we thought we would check them out but they were on the move. We were able to keep track of them till we started getting close then it got quite and we couldn't keep track of them. Well we chose the wrong bull he was a six but I figured due to the tracks the other bull had the cows. He busted us at 30 yds in the thick of things. Got a look at him with my bad eye.
Off to meet for lunch. And we decide to work a group of trees where we seen a spike. I and Bobcat pushed a couple spikes to Neilo.

The next morning Neilo was getting impatiant knowing he was running out of time. Never killing a bull before he was ready to kill anything with more then one point.
Bess had found a couple that had crossed a feild the eve before so he wanted to check them out and we headed to where we thought the bulls might be. We are getting out of the truck at dark thirty in the morning the heard had moved and they were 1/2 mile closer and from the sounds of things we had several bulls working the heard. Chills run up and down my spine I knew we we going to get in on this heard and catch them in the open. They were screaming everywhere! The problem we had been having the elk were always headed for the trees at first light. The thing about the trees they were thicker then hair on a dogs back.
It is getting light and the heard is working its way towards us. Then Neilo gets set up and he is dialed in on the heard. He said there are 3 bulls. I am looking and say no 4 bulls, anouther bull apears and then a 6th bull and about 12 cows. These bulls are tearing it up. Neilo is trying to size them up in the scope but they won't hold still and the are moving off while fighting and not one would stand still! They are in a tight heard and I spot the Mr big in the middle of the heard. He steps out but had elk all around him. Not wanting to get shot. He was a 370-380 bull. I am not the best judge but he dwarfed the other bulls. It is shooting light and all of a sudden he just headed out for the trees. Not presenting a shot except a 400 yard Arse shot. Neilo didn't want to chance wounding it. And no way was he going to let the morning get away with out a shot. He picked out a bull and boom. End of story for now
It was great to spend time with Bobcat and my son. Great times. Thanks and cheers.
Rutnbuck

One happy son! His first bull

The guy in the top right carried that bull out whole on his back out of a deep dark canyon so we could get some pics. It was to dark in the canyon to get any pics.
