Gave some info out to people earlier this year but never heard back on how the hunts went. So I will put the question out here since I have not seen very many posts on the subject. How were the elk hunts on Bittercreek and the roadless this year?

It sucked not many bulls were killed and the size of the racks were small due to low moisture.

Yeah, Most people are just looking for handouts. They talk like they are your buddy until they don't need you anymore and then say "To Hell with Ya"

So not to Hi Jack your thread. I know of a couple Spike Elk that were killed by a Husband and his Wife and some smaller management style bucks with a bow and rifle.

It was a different year out there, Drier than normal and Elk and Deer were in some different spots than normal. Didn't here of anything big coming of the Books other than what had already been posted on here.

Sorry I know that not what your looking for.

his wifes bull was bittercreek bull but it is about 40-50 inches larger than the average bull taken in that area. NO BS'n this time!

The average bull on the roadless side is better than the bittercreek side. Just a fact! I have a friend that guided on the roadless side this year and last year. he also had an archery tag this year. They were chasing some absolute brutes with a bow out there. I don't know if they were ever killed or not because no one has posted anything on them. One was over 390 and two were over 370.

how many points do you have and what weapon are you going to use.

the bookcliffs is a hard area to scout for an archery hunt and the success rate is low. You won't see many bulls during the summer because they are pretty nocturnal and hang out in some weird areas. In fact you won't see many bulls until the rut heats up out there. So more often than not you luck into a big bull then scout one up is what im saying.

I have zero elk points and am still putting in for deer. If I was going to spend some elk points it would be in the roadless area. this area is also not that hard to get into without horses and hunt. Its not an area you can take a family and hang out in unless you have a few horses though. If its just you and one or two of your buds its totally do able on your back.

I actually have hunted Bittercreek for archery elk before. I have 11 points, but now live in Grand Junction. I am really asking for my younger brother to see if we want to do that archery hunt again. He has around 7 points saved up. I had a blast and chased an absolute monster, but just couldnt seal the deal. Still killed a very good bull, although average for the unit...

Nice bull!

looks like with only one tag going to bonus points and if you apply with your brother you will just screw each other out of a chance at the tag unless you guys are the first one who draws the lottery tag.

With your 11 points you have a good chance at the bonus tag if no one drops down but your brother is several years out. Maybe more then 10 years out.

I thought the waiting period for elk was 4 years if you drew in 2010 I don't think your eligible until 2014. I could be wrong though on the non resident tags.

That is unless he is a resident. He could draw on his own and you could draw on your own as a non resident.

Good luck hope you get lucky!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-05-12 AT 06:42PM (MST)[p]I am going to save my points up for another unit for now. I am leaning towards a muzzy tag. I love to bow hunt, but I realize how hard it is to tag out. I would be scouting and guiding for my brother if he decides to go for the books. He is a Utah resident. My experience has been there are a few monster bulls with some 320-340 bulls on the unit.

Before the MM police send the wardens to my door, I better explain. I killed my bull using an expo tag. Lol

What Jerry said. Come on Scott, get your facts straight. I drew in 2010 and can't put in until 2016. Sucks to have to wait until then. Hopefully I can get my antelope tag before then...:)

I had the roadless any weapon tag this year and my post is the one that Browning Rage referenced.

There was plenty of moisture in the roadless during the antler growth period. We did not notice the grass start to appear dry until the very end of August. If you hit a year of good rutting action, you will have the hunt of a lifetime out there. I had one good day of the rut total during my hunt(Wednesday prior to the opener), and I saw more bulls on that day than I did all the other days combined. I really enjoyed the back country experience that the roadless offers. With that being said, many people who wanted to go on the hunt with me, were unable to, simply due to their lack of transportation(horses). The bull I killed is by far the biggest one I saw, by about 30", and the 3rd biggest one I have even heard about being killed on the unit last year. Double C outfitters killed one on the opener that was a little bigger than mine, and there was one in the parking lot that was a brute! Other than that, I have talked to many tag holders that killed 280-310 6 points. I feel very fortunate to have harvested as big a bull as I did, and do not regret the choice of unit at all.

I drew the any weapon tag with 14 points as a resident.

Well since Sliver mentioned it, I guess that I should post up a pic of the bulls we got in the Roadless area this year. The first one was on opening morning. A single shot across the canyon and this guy didn't go anywhere but down. It green scored 362 2/8.

We got this bull a few days later. It greened at 335. This hunter had just come off a 7-day hunt in the Thorofarre in Wyoming and his legs were shot. We found him a much bigger bull but it was in a nasty hole and he was not able to go after it. We estimated it to be as big or even a little bigger than the first bull. Hopefully it makes it through until next year.

My personal opinion is that the roadless is the best unit in the state. Sure there are units that consistently produce higher scoring bulls, but if you like to get away from the roads, ATV's and crowds, the roadless is really tough to beat.

Good luck in the draws this year.
