Its never to early to think about next year.Do to work schedule it looks like I will have to hunt the second season October opener.I have a general question and was hoping someone could help.In unit 66 and 67 do the majority of the deer migrate into these units or are they in the unit just at higher elevations?I was looking at the 07 draw stats and i should have no problem drawing ( 7 points ).I hate to use them on the 2nd season but it will be 3 years without drawing a Muledeer tag,its time .
Thanks

The deer in the Gunnison Basin tend to stay here. They'll migrate from high to low, but in general won't leave the area.

I agree with wag some of the deer tend to stay in the valley and some seem to go up into the high country. I have seen great bucks in both areas around that first season. Just put in some preseason scouting and find yourself the deer that you want and camp with him. In that first deer season the deer are still in a routine some what and you will find them in the same general area frequently. Weather plays a factor in that also. Last year our winter started in Sept. That is great tag so make the most of it! jc

Can anyone comment on how the elk hunting is in this Unit (66)? I am going archery hunting this year. I wanted to hunt the Powderhorn Wilderness. Any info would be much appreciated.

Califhuntn,
The elk hunting is great. The Powderhorn Wilderness holds a lot of elk. Being that unit is a draw unit you should have less hunting pressure than in most other units. Get up as high as you can and glass. We see a lot of elk above timber line the first few days of season. You may want some horses. All in all you should have a great hunt. Good luck and shoot straight.

jcmuleys, thank you for the response. I will actually be there during the last part of the season. 9/16 - 9/21. I am considering being packed into the wilderness (Powderhorn West).

JR,
That is a great time to hunt I often think that the 15-25 is the peak of the rut in most years. Peak of the Rut in the Powderhorn Wilderness I think you have it all figured out. Hunt with a buddy if you can have him call behind you. Good luck send me a message on how your hunt goes. JC
