Need some help!
My wife and i always archery deer hunt the Bighorns around Burjess junction. Well, no Elk tags this year. Put in for the leftover Deer and guess what, didn't draw. Seems they cut tags by around 1,000 because of the drought in the plains. I got to checking and there are leftover deer tags for area J. I was looking at the Medicine Bow Mountains just south of Casper, west of Douglas. Could anybody give me some info on where to camp, start. I hate to ask but the Bighoens is the only place we have ever hunted in Wyoming and i don't know a thing about this new area. We just love to come out and enjoy your great state and do a little archery hunting. I don't want to know anybodys favorite spot just a place to camp. Thanks for any help.

I hunted J a few years ago. I was very disappointed with the lack of deer and abundance of hunters. I didn't hunt the area you're talking about, but the general consensus among the people I talked to is that its not a good unit. There's some nice scenery, and I did see one decent muley buck.

Region J is not a good unit if you are planning on hunting public ground. Quality and quantity can both be issues.

If you can find a private ranch and get access, htere are soem great areas. It has good habitat and good potential, but the public areas get punded anda the deer do not have a chance to get old or big.

I've lived and hunted the area for over 30 years and do not recommend it to others who might be hunting on the limited public lands. Sorry to give you bad news.

I hunted Region J from 2000 - 2003 and I can confirm what the others have already said. You may see more hunters than deer. If you are set on hunting WY send me a PM and I will let you know the areas that I hunted in J. One year we did pretty good but that was in 2000 and maybe we were just lucky. The other years were disappointing. I am a non-resident and am hooked on hunting WY. I have hunted WY the past 10 years and can't wait to go back.
