which one would you take

Found these three guys and they gave me some good vidieo. The nontypical and wide 4X4 are young deer I think and the tall heavy 4X4 looks like an old deer that is the one I think I would take, I also like the way his mainbems curl around to the front.

In the last picture I would take the one on the right, then the middle one. The one on the left looks younger.

The buck on the right and back is the oldest deer. Look at his head, the width between his eyes,he is paunchy and even his cape is darker. But that non-typical will be a great buck if he gets to live. Shoot the older buck and pray that no one finds his buddies!

The third photo is why I shoot a .50 caliber

Just kidding!

All beautiful bucks with potential to be great bucks!

Eel

I would take the larger typical buck (farthest to the right in first picture). The buck with extra points would make the decision difficult. If he looked as old as the other buck and had a little more mass I would take him without question.

>Anyone that would hold still long
>enough to get a bead
>on him.

I second that.... Would love to take any of the three... The only problem is something happens to my rifle when it sees a buck that's bigger than a forky or small three point.. It starts to shake and usually will miss a big buck.. don't know whats wrong with it.

Nice photos. I think both of the younger bucks have potential to be even bigger than the older buck. The older one is the best this year.

Depended on what day of the season for me---beginning of the season I'd pass em all up, last day of the season I'd take the oldest one. Great pictures by the way.

Since I have recent experience at getting overly excited at seeing some nice bucks, I know I'd shoot the fist one I locked in on, and then wonder what the hell I was thinking. In this case it wouldn't make a big difference though would it. Nice pics.

This is a trick question, right?

Reminds me of my youth, sitting in a bar with 2 college buddies and 3 foxy chicks walk in. The 2 friends start arguing over which one they wanted and being a good guy, I simply said "I'll take the ugly one". I'm 60 now, so I guess my answer would be.....nope, still the same, "I'll take the ugly one".

Good job on the photos. I'd take great satisfaction in knowing that I got close enough to get that pic....clearly, you could have shot any of them with a rifle.

Cool things about camera "hunting"; Season is open all year. You can shoot in parks, golf courses and high school football fields. It is way quiet. It is real clean. You can track down and shoot the same deer time after time. Ammo is cheap. Targets of opportunity are abundant.

And last but not least, you don't care how far it is to the truck since you don't have to drag that smelly beast there anyway.

On your way home, you can stop by the grocery and buy a couple of filet mignons and a halfrack. Go home, BBQ some "real" meat, knock back some beers and view your "trophy" on TV, knowing full well that the ONLY difference between the photo thing and the gun thing is simply the blood.

Nick your nutso. So did the ugly one go home with you and let you take pics of her to look at for 50 years. Meanwhile you went to the Neighbors for real good meat?

About the deer. I will name the pic Busted. Good Job

LAST EDITED ON Aug-26-07 AT 02:26AM (MST)[p] So, Rutnbuck, what do you do during the off season? Nintendo? Cabela's Deer Buster video shooting game? Watch other people kill stuff on the Outdoor channel? Are you like, almost 21? You were rude......

Personnaly, I keep huntin'. I take pictures on the winter range. I hunt sheds in the spring. I watch daily antler growth as soon as it starts. I look at feed growth, water hole use and habitat condition. I am out everyday before sunrise and out every night after work, for as long as it's light enough to see ANYTHING.

I guess I should mention that I live and work in the premier deer and elk zone in California. All the "playing outdoors" has been easy for me, most of my life.

I shoot coyotes all year long and keep a Brittany and a Lab and use them for what they were bred to do.

But, no matter where I am hunting, what I am hunting or who I am hunting with, I'll drop everything if I spot a deer that I can watch for as long as it stays in sight.

There is simply more to deer and elk hunting than just pulling the trigger; any fool can do that. While you are sittin' around waiting for deer season, some of us are out among them, practicing our stalking skills, learning what's going on and ..... just being out among them.

Several years that I have not drawn a tag, I go and camp in my favorite hunting areas anyway, just as I would if I had a tag. The entire experience is the same for me, except for the actual kill and if you can't comprehend that, I feel sorry for what is missing in your life.

And no, I don't like deer meat, so I don't hunt deer simply for meat. I haven't killed a forky since I was 20....and that was a while back. I have six 190+ deer and two 300+ elk and a pickup load of non typicals with more "junk" than you can imagine.

I personnaly think venison was specifically invented by God for jerky. I believe that is how Noah managed to feed his family on the Ark.....(he fed some venison to lions also and they never forgot how much they like it. It was good cat food then and it is obviously still good cat food now.) But that's just my opinion; and the cat's also.

Elk is another matter entirely, just had elk meatballs and rice for dinner tonight. I still have over 200# of elk in the chest freezer.

I sincerly hope you have a good season.

I know I will, even if I don't get a shot at this "hog" I have been chasing for 3 straight years, without a tag..........I drew this year, so he may be in trouble.

I can tell you anything you want to know about where he feeds, waters, beds down morning and afternoon and how many times he gets up to pee in the middle of the day. We have made eye contact several times, both in and out of season. Most recent visit was 2 weeks ago and he is still in velvet.

He has a new cat in his area....or at least she is way bigger than last year....They are using the same waterhole. Hope he dosen't test her. I know I have the edge on any other hunters and I should be the first hunter to see him this season, but I don't trust the lion not to be a lion.

(Want to ask how I know it's a female? Something I learned 'cuz I was "out among 'em". My Brit pees on any other animals' pee above ground and just points pee sites on the ground. No cat spray in the bushes or trees in the area and lots of it on the ground. Free lesson, no charge.)

I have told a hundred lies to other hunters in the area, to keep them from even seeing his tracks....I sweep them away whenever he gets too close to roads and camping sites, or when he uses a specific guzzler in his range.....Probably an argument as to if what I have been doing is even legal or ,
ethical, but it is way, way fun, that's why I do it.

By the way, if I meet a young kid on his first or second hunt, I'll put him right on this buck and I'll sleep just as good as if I were to take him myself...maybe sleep better. Done it before and it feels really, really good.

Am I "Nutso"....? Maybe so. But it wears real well for me.

Now be nice when you reply, as I am old and sensitive to abuse, both oral and written, as they say.

Whoa Back there Nickster. Didn't mean to get your braids all twisted up in a knot. Sorry Man Welcome to MM.

Nice story.

Have a great hunt. Hope ya get your buck killed.

Go Well

Wow, Rut, did you get put in your place?...OR WHAT!!...I'm glad to see you made it home from your four-month scouting trip or did you make that post from your laptop from high up on a ridge of no-man's land? How's the new book coming along? I like the title you ran past me last year...(How I Survived)...Anyone that spent that long in total isolation, forging off roots and grubs has my respect...Did you ever finish the article on that family of Camel-Toed NOSEEUMS that you tracked for a year and a half? I really like your writings on the Split Tail Ruff..I don't see how you find the time to do all this with all the time you spend taking the little FUBARS out camping...Keep up the good work!........RIMROCK

All are great bucks. However, if I had a choice i'd shoot the one on the right in the last picture. Good solid neck on him.
