Antelope Island Hunt?

I heard this morning that the DWR turned down a request for a hunt to take place on the Island. The proceeds would have benifited the Miners family's.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for donations but when will people stop trying to hunt that island? I suspect it was a deer tag. I would really like to know who suggested the hunt. My first thoughts were "why not auction off an "extra" conservation tag? Some of those go for ALOT of money. I think a henrys tag went for 62k last year.

I have to question why a hunt on the island. Some of these conservation groups have really tried to get tags to kill deer on the island. I wonder if someone was trying to use the misfortune of the familys to sqeek their way into hunting that place. Made me pretty sick to think about it.

I post this to get more information. I am not accusing anyone of anything.

Why promote/support killing on animal, like a deer, to support such a sad situation. I never could understand that kind of thinking. I'd say try another method, to sell the killing of on animal, veiled with a backdrop of so many deaths seems like bad karma to me. . .

My first thought was that someone figured a tag on the island would garner the most media and highest dollar.

It was a bad idea. I am not trying to minimize the fact that nine people died in the mine tragedy, but tragedies happen all to often (Trolley Sqaure, eight year old little girl in Tremonton with no immediate family any more) and we can't start auctioning off deer tags every time. . . . etc. etc. etc.

We could ask the State to donate a few slightly used state vehicles to aution off and give that money to the miners. Of course this isn't going to happen and it sounds ridiculous. But, it is the same concept.

People should donate if they can, and if they feel compelled, to the miner's families, they will need it. But the state should stay out of making donations when tragedies occur. There are plenty of other ways the state helps those in need.

Browtine, with due respect, here's 3 reasons I see.

1. They are dying of old age.
2. Its an untapped renewable resource.
3. Hunters & deer, rely on each other to maintain healthy deer herd numbers.

I agree the current reason is lame.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-24-07 AT 09:44AM (MST)[p]No worries, to each there own on this topic and I will just mention some of the reasons why I really hate the idea of a deer hunt out there.

ISLAND. nuff said about that. This is also a state PARK where we take our family and great place to take your kids to show them these animals. It kills me that there are people out there that think just because there is a deer somewhere, it needs to be hunted because there is someone willing to pay alot of money. It falls back on money, EVERYTIME.

As far as a resource, why, since we have this kind of place, do we have to hunt them? It really makes me sick. If we want to hunt utah, start giving more LE tags out.

"1.Dying of old age". So do people. Sorry man, I don't see that as a factor.
"3. Hunters & deer, rely on each other to maintain healthy deer herd numbers." The island has been there and sustained "life" by record since 1845. The deer heard is doing just fine as seen by the size of some of the animals there.

I covered number two with my oppinion. Like I said. To each there own. An I completly agree that this reason is unbelievable.

I see no problem with maybe having a couple archery or muzzleloader deer tags available out there on the island, but NO AUCTION tags. I think hunting them with a bow or muzzleloader would be a fine challenge. I would support a couple primitive weapon hunts that are DRAW ONLY.

I agree with founder. Primitive weapons, no auction. I can't stand the mentality that the only way to raise money is thru auction tags. Make the hunt an annual "huntington mine" dedicated primitive hunt.

You know, for all these years that a few folks have been trying to make this Antelope Island hunt happen, NEVER has it been suggested that ALL tags be DRAW ONLY. It's always about having a tall dollar auction tag.
WE HAVE ENOUGH AUCTION TAGS in Utah!!!

I agree!!! Primitive weapon draw only. Maybe even make it resident draw only. Take it one step further and make it dedicated hunter draw only. Give the sportsmen in this state a carrot. The many sportsmen who take time and effort to actually help wildlife. I know I would donate a few more hours of my time for an opportunity like that.

I doubt it would ever happen as just draw tags, but I like that idea. I would love to see that happen, give some awesome trophy opportunity just to the general public. Maybe SFW could make it happen to show some good will and appreciation for all the auction tags the average joe working hunter in Utah doesn't have a chance at?

I do think that the fact it is an island isn't reason enough to say the hunt wouldn't be fair chase. I went out there on the shed hunt circus a couple years ago and there was some serious country, more than you might think when you hear "island". The island is 42 square miles, more than 26,000 acres, much bigger than lots of CWMU's in the state. The mountains are 2,500 feet above the level of the lake, and there is limited motorized access. Yeah, it is an island, but I don't think a hunt would be like shooting fish in a barell either.

The problem is, CWMU boundries arent water locked...

Does ANYONE know who suggested this? How about fishon, or anyone else in the know.

if it's going to be a hunt at all, it must be open to anyone (i'd support residence only), but no discrimination against old people who can no longer get around or who cant shoot a bow or strike with a spear. You elitists have to give grandpa a shot at a big buck, not everyone has young legs. . .

I'm from Idaho and would not be eligible if most of you get your way. BUT YOU'RE STILL RIGHT. There are way too many high-dollar auction tags. Our sport is heading rapidly down the road toward European hunting....where ANYONE can hunt for a (huge) small fee. If you've got deer dying of old age, it seems perfectly reasonable to allow 2 or 20 (you know the numbers) of hunters each year. The weapon matters little. A dead deer is dead, whether old age, a .300 Weatherby or an arrow. It's still one gone.

Here is an idea.. Lets hunt Yellowstone!!!!!!! SWEEEET! Or Zions!.. why not.. they have big animals..

LAST EDITED ON Aug-26-07 AT 01:06PM (MST)[p]Here in BC we can hunt most of our Provincial Parks. There are a few heavily used Parks that don't have hunting, but the majority are managed for hunters as a legit management tool. We can't however hunt our National Parks because they are federally run. But....there are a few in Canada that the First Nations have worked deals out with the Feds to allow for hunting. The Kluane is an example of that.

I THINK MY CHANCES WOULD BE GREATLY ENHANCED IF THE ANIMAL WAS SURROUNDED BY WATER!!!

JUST KIDDING!!!

EVERYBODY KNOWS I AIN'T GOT ENOUGH MONEY TO HUNT THE ISLAND EVEN IF THEY GET IT PASSED!!!

FOR GODS SAKE Beefy!!!

DON'T LET THE DWR KNOW WE HAVE ANIMALS DIEING OF OLD AGE!!!

I THINK RATHER THAN KILLING BUCKS ON THE ISLAND WE OUGHT TO TRANSPLANT A FEW OF THEM & SPREAD SOME GENES!!!

AND Moosie!!!

NOTE,I SAID GENES NOT JEANS!!!

I THINK BEFORE ITS OVER BOB MURRAY MIGHT BE LOOKING AT WAYS TO RAISE MONEY!!!

LETS NOT SELL ONE PERMIT ON THE ISLAND!!!

MIGHT BE THE LAST PLACE TO SEE A BIG BUCK IN UTAH BEFORE LONG!!!
