Well, here it is. Not quite what I was after but ok for only having 2 days to hunt. I passed up on a half dozen bucks and settled for this guy at last light on my last day to hunt. He walked within 20 yards of my treestand and began to feed on the the moss that was on the branches that I had cut out of the tree to get my stand up to where I wanted it. I had to wait 1/2 hour for him to leave before I got a shot. He was facing me the whole time and never knew that I was there. 1 arrow and a 40 yard run and he was ready for the long drag out. I do dig his right eye guard though.

That's a great buck in anyone's book! Well, maybe not so much Pope and Young's or Safari Club International, or Boone and Crockett. But uhmmm uhhhh... HE'S GREAT IN MINE! Congrats! Should have let the wolves clean the hide off of the skull for you!

A 13 pointer by Eastern standards! They get those weird eyeguards from eating eelgrass. HAHAHA!!!

I don't know what you are complaining about, that is a dang nice whitetail. I know you have killed some real nice ones over there but that is a good buck.

RE: (Not so mighty) archery whitie

Thanks for the comments guys! I guess that I came off as being dissapointed in him. I'm not! He is a cool, quirky kinda dude. I aged him at 3 1/2, so really not that old. The buck that I was after I have been trying to stick for 4 years. I had my mind dead set on him. He is a 160 class symetrical 5x5 that never showed up. My buddy got a look at him a couple of weeks ago and confirmed that he was using the same spot that he has for the past couple of years. I think that his days are numbered due to his age and the increasing amount of predators in the area. It wouldnt supprise me if we was a victim of winterkill this year. I wish that I would not have forgotten and left my camera (binocs, rangefinder, calls and scents) at home and gotten some pics of his scrape and rub line. They were awesome! This year was a little rushed. I only had 2 days to hunt and wound up forgetting half of my gear at home. We here out of power again and instead of getting my stuff loaded, I got the generator and stuff set up for the wife and kiddies. It also cut my hunt short by a day. Oh well, it turned out alright after all.

RE: (Not so mighty) archery whitie

nice one, pbear....many other hunters up there this year? good pics, thanks

RE: (Not so mighty) archery whitie

Man! That's a big one! It would put you in the big buck club
for gun or bow here in NY. You sure have high standards if you had to
"settle" for him. I would be totally satisfied for life if I
got one like that. Congrats PB!

RE: (Not so mighty) archery whitie

Very nice rack with tons of character. Sorry your hunt was so rushed. I know how that can take some of the fun out of it.

Congratulations Eric! Looks like a cool buck to me. I'm hoping to see something with horns for my first attempt at an archery deer, probably going around Loomis, but may go east of Republic but not until December 2nd and only for 3 days. Good Luck if you are going late elk again, I doubt you'll top yours from last year, but I bet you'll give it a good try.

RE: (Not so mighty) archery whitie

Bess, no the wife does not hunt. I wish that she did.
Littlefoot, I hunt a pretty isolated area so I never see any other hunters. There were a few bowhunters a couple of mountains over, but I didnt hear of any bucks being taken just a few does. The bucks were in rut but doing it at night.
Mike, thanks and good luck! I might not get to hunt late archery elk this year. I pinched a nerve in my lower back while hauling my buck out of the woods and my left leg drops out from underneath me every now and then. I am hoping that it works itself out within the next couple of days so that I can go! It sucks getting old! Haaahaaaaa!!!!!!

RE: (Not so mighty) archery whitie

Huntingnut1, thanks! I didnt get to do any rattling. I left my calls and rattling horns etc at home. I was in too much of a hurry and forgot them. My Dad broke his toe and sprained his knee while we were over there and never got to go out. He stayed in the cabin and read the whole time. It was kind of a goofy trip. I found out today that I have a ruptured disc. My first every back injury. Woooo hoooo!!!! I'm hoping to be better so I can chase elk by next week, who knows.
