it was hard to narrow it down as to what buck to go after....with some other hunts that I was committed to be a part of or guide I knew my time was limited.......But the decision of which on to go after was made easy when two days before the hunt my brother Adam found HIM! The Freak of Nature....not that often one see's a real 40 incher!!

After seeing him the thursday and friday before the hunt, we elected to not go after the great typical and NT that I was hoping to get.
Instead we decided to spend a week on this big boy. On the opening Sunday night, I was at one point with in 42 yards (Kylor filming on video) I had a texas heart shot and even a liver shot/gut shot but elected to wait until I had a great shot. Well... that never happened thanks to a snorting doe and a bolting 30" heavy three point!!!

After another week+ of searching for him and not seeing him again, and with my best friend Kylor with a San Juan archery elk tag in his pocket, and still one other San Juan archery elk tag holder that I was committed to guiding, I decided that this buck would do me fine, my biggest to date!

He is a 28" 6x8, a GROSS score of 188 1/4 nt.
It was hard to give up on something pushing 40"....but we had a great time trying!!

so if any of you are thinking that their are still No big bucks on elkridge....keep thinking that,
oh and if any of you that are putting in for elkridge archery, and happen to draw next year and want to go after a ligit 40" let me know, I might know where one is hanging out, assuming we don't find him again with some rifle hunters.....

Now we are after Kylor's bull...see you all at the end of Sept.

Good luck to all that still have tags...

Travis

Oh yeah, for those that don't know, elkridge unit is in southeastern UT.

OMG that freak of nature is awesome! congrats on that great buck as well? what are some good outfitters up there that have that type of quality running around?

WOW great bucks you found and a dang nice one you harvested! Thanks for sharing and please keep us posted on the upcoming hunts!

Sounds like you brought it all together. Just goes to show that scouting pays off big time. Congrats on a nice buck. I hope that me in a couple of weeks when the muzzy starts.

Travis,
Congrats on a great archery buck!!!! There is no doubt you found some top-notch bucks in that unit. That wide buck is a JAW DROPPER!!!! Quite something to have to settle on just a 188 buck eh? LOL! Hell of a nice buck with a bow though. Heck, hell of a nice buck with any equipment. Got me pumped for the season to start here. Opening day for the youth season is this weekend. Will be the first year my 11 year old will be hunting for deer. I Can't wait!!!!!

I'D OF CANCELLED THE BIG STINKY HUNT & STILL BE HUNTING THE 40"ER!!!

YOU CAN GET A BIG STINKY ANYTIME!!!

A 40"ER IN THAT AREA NOW DAYS IS LIKE A 40"ER HERE IN THE NE REGION!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THAT KNOWS ALOT OF YOU HAVE HAD THIS IMAGE IN YOUR PEA BRAIN BUT DUE TO POOR SHOOTING TACTICS I'M STILL KICKIN!!!

Nice Buck! Not too many people can say the big one got away when they shot a 188" buck...lol. You're right....that bad boy is definitely a freak of nature.

Hell of a hunt and buck, Travis. Thanks for posting that monster.

Well, the post has been made, the cat is out of the bag... Hopefully one of your buddies or clients will harvest that 40 incher since your put him in the spotlight. What a treat we had seeing a picture of him.

Ran around down there on elk hunt in 05 and had a blast. Great country. Good luck this season, and keep those 40 inchers and 400 inch bulls coming on your posts.

Congratulations on a great looking buck. Its a tremendous accomplishment to take a mature mule deer with the stick and string and you should be proud.

Congrats Travis on a super buck. Thanks for sharing all the photos and stories with us. Good luck on the upcoming hunts.

Heck of a nice buck for sure Travis, "Did you take on that other hunt", 40"er now that a buck and a half, it looks like you got some great video of the bucks out that way. I'm sure you will get a rifle or muzz hunter that drew elkridge wanting a chance at him.

Thanks for sharing. Congratulations on a great buck. It takes a real respect for the animal to not take a bad shot on that 40" buck.

Great buck you killed!! I keep coming back and looking at that monster that you were trying for. That gets your blood going. I think that just convinced me that I will be heading back out this weekend to look around.

Here we go again, somebody overstating width of a buck. No way he's over 39 7/8!!! Congrats on a great deer w/ a lot of character.

I guess he will have take a hunter back out there and let the air out of him so we can see if he was strecthing the truth by 1/8" LMAO I hope we get to see that one on the ground this fall yet.

Awesome bucks, congrats, I don't want to sound queer or anything, but you looked better with the goatee.

No matter what anyone says, a bird in the hand...... Other committments, great buck in range, no one should second guess your decision to take that buck. Nice job and good luck on the elk hunt.

Nice job on killing a bruiser. Sounds like you had a fun hunt and anytime you see deer of that caliber just makes it even better. Thanks for sharing and ill keep building my Utah Points.

Awesome buck and even better photos! Didn't you guys resently have a buck featured on a DWR press release? Lets hear the "Reel" story.
