I am a non resident possibly looking into unit 61-1 Elk in Wyoming for 2014. I was wondering if anyone had hunted it on here and what the size of elk I should expect there. I am hoping to do this hunt with my 62 year old dad as I know these opportunities are going to be fewer. I know that it is wilderness so I am also looking for any outfitter info and recommendations anyone has. Thanks.

Bob Sundeen is the only outfitter up there. Google his name and you'll find his site and see what the area has to offer...

Thanks. My dad and I have 5 this year and looking to the future I was thinking that as he gets older we will be more limited. So now may be the time to burn them on a high country horseback hunt. It is something Ive wanted to do since I was a kid and I know that the memory will be priceless.

Do it before it gets to late and health problem pop up.
You and your dad will have a good time.

I hunted it last fall with Bob, and highly recommend him. I think everyone in camp took a 300 elk or better except me but that's a long story. A couple of guys in the one group of hunters passed on 300 bulls an ate tag soup. I did kill a decent bull. Feel free to PM me if you want know anymore. You will see many many grizzlies.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-26-13 AT 09:32AM (MST)[p]I too hunted with Bob Sundeen in 61 last year. Also hunted with my dad who is 66. Hunt of a lifetime for sure and great experience. I wanted a highcountry, horsback, wall tent hunt with lots of bulls... and that's exactly what we got. Cornhusker is right about the Grizzly up there and make sure you have a wolf tag in your pocket.

Thanks guys. Sounds like a great time. Do you have any pictures of your hunts that you could PM me? I'm not quite as afraid of grizzlies as most guys as I've fished with the Grizzlies in Kodiak and went elk hunting on Afognak Island in Alaska and had to deal with the Brown Bears. We surprised a Sow and cub at less than 30 yards that were on our meat. Needless to say I left something in my pants but after that encounter a little of the edge has been taken off.

You can go to their web site, trailswest.com and see hunts from years past. I'll be able to hunt with him in 2014,if the stars line up!

You will not regret a day spent with Sundeen. I hunted 62 with him and we had hunters in camp with 61 tags. We all filled with great bulls. Lots of elk, lots of grizzly and until this last year, no wolves.

Beautiful country, too!
