I looking to apply for a meat hunt. I live in Texas and have never hunted NM before. Any suggions and a good easy to draw area with decent cows?

Thanks for you help.

My cousin and a group of his buddies hunt the Mescalero Apache reservation every year for I think $500 / man. Not a bad price if you're from out of state. I don't believe there is a guide involved, or anything. Pretty much DIY I guess. Never have done it myself.

As stated above, non residents cannot apply for a cow tag. However, you can apply for either sex tags or you can purchase a cow tag from a landowner.

That doesn't sound bad. Since it's reservation, that means no NM license is needed?

I don't believe a NM license is needed. Not totally sure, though. They fill their tags more often than not. Must be a good hunt.

That's correct since the rez is like a "sovereign nation". Another option would be to check the Albuquerque Journal classifieds or the Albuquerque craigslist. Tags will probably start showing up after the draw results in June or you can place an ad now yourself. I'm sure landowners will have an idea if they're getting any welfare from the state this year.

The Mescalero Apcahe Reservation hunt is another option. You do have to apply and I have no idea of the draw odds. Deadline to apply is March 18.
