I was able to tag out today on this nice buck. Haven't put a tape to him yet. He is kind of a consolation buck. I missed a HUGE buck this morning ( put a little crease in his back). It was a shot every bow hunter dreams of and I totally blew it. The image of the buck standing in front of me is burned into my memory and won't go away. I am going to have nightmares. I found this guy late this afternoon and decided if I could get in close for a shot I would take it. I would only have the odd day hunting from this point on so am quite happy with this guy. I will put up a story tomorrow.

Saskman, Great job on a great buck. The other buck must have been Huge, if he was a lot bigger then this one.

I was thinking the same thing. Very nice buck!

Awesome job Cam! Sorry to hear you missed the big guy but that is still a great buck!

WOW! I wish I had a consolation buck like that. Most people would die to have shot that buck in the first place. Congrats on getting the job done. Let us know what he tapes out at.

LOL Tony! I agree though, Cam....awesome buck.

You will never kill a "good" deer if you keep "settling" for the "small" ones. I think I better go with you next year. I will keep you from shootin them "little" bucks. I will even sacrifice and kill a "little" one so you are not tempted!
Great deer
Thanx for sharing

Sask,

You always impress me with your monster mulies! Dead or alive!

Pretty scary to think what Plan A looked like if this was Plan B! Congrats on another sweet mulie. Nicely done!

..one more thing, could you guide a Utard on a mulie rifle hunt? Or would you even want to?;-)

Great looking buck!!! Every year I look forward to seeing your pics. You definately have been knockin over some pigs the last few years. Congrats on yet another one! Are you going to get out for whiteys this year?

Congratulations! Beautiful buck! It seems the really big bucks live a charmed life. At least around me.

A four foot putt is easy to make. Unless it's to win the U.S. Open!:)

Great job! And congrats! That's one heck of a consolation buck! Very impressive. Thanks for sharing.

Way to go Cam. Keep sticking them mulies. Way to stay at it. That is a awesome buck.

Here is the story to the buck.

Well I had quite the day on Friday. We spotted the big buck we called limpy early in the morning ( very bad limp on his left front leg). He was with two other bucks and we had an idea where they were heading to bed down from past experience in the area. We beat them to the spot and waited. I was set up to take the shot. Right on cue Limpy came over the horizon heading right at me. He pulled up at about 25 yards facing me and behind a piece of buckbrush . He had no idea we were there. Finally after a couple of minutes he turned and took a few steps to my left. He presented me with every bowhunters dream shot, 24 yards and completely broadside with no idea we were in the area. I slowly drew the bow and settled the 20 yard pin behind his shoulder. The release went off and I saw the arrow hit him way high and above his spine. I was in absolute shock. The easiest shot you could ever ask for and I completely blew it. I felt completely sick. We watched the buck and followed him for over a mile and he showed absolutely no ill effect from the shot. There was not even a spot of blood on his side. It was one of the worst feelings I have ever had.
I decided to go out for the evening and see what I could see. I wasn?t much in the mood for hunting but figured I had better get back in the saddle. I spotted a decent buck bedded on a hill side covered in brush and chokecherry bushes. The wind was good and I figured I could sneak in on him from above. I made a circle and came in from the top. I spotted his antler tips in the brush and made my final approach to within 40 yards in my socks. He wasn't as big as Limpy but I figured if he gave me a shot I would take it as I really wanted to prove to myself I could still shoot. I just had to wait for him to stand to go out to feed and hopefully I would have a shot. I waited about a half hour and his antlers began to move a little more. I could tell he was getting ready to stand. I bent over at the waist to try and hide behind some silver willow. When he stood he was totally facing me and I could only see his head and neck. He stood and scanned the hill side for a few minutes. My back was beginning to get sore from bending over and I didn't know how much longer I could stay still. Finally he turned to my left and began to browse. I still couldn't see his body. He began angling slightly towards me and his body began to come into view. He made about a quarter turn to look towards the North and presented me with a perfect quartering away shot at 38 yards. I drew and put my pin on him and made sure I was holding where I wanted. The release went off and the arrow hit perfectly. He gave a little kick and ran about 10 yards, stopped, gave another little kick and made it about another 40 yards before piling up. I felt very happy about making a great shot and proving that I still can shoot and am very happy with this buck, but I still can't get the image of that huge buck standing 24 yards away out of my head. I think that will give me nightmares for a very long time. This buck is not nearly as big as limpy but I still rough scored him at 188 gross. I hate to think what Limpy may have scored as he made this guy seem very average.

Saskman

Excellent buck. Think of it this way, if you were to have gotten the big buck, then you couldn't find his sheds in the spring. Congrats on a very nice buck. When in the heck do they come out of the velvet up there?

Cam:

You've got those big ol' muleys dilaed in!. Congrats on a fine looking buck and awesome field photos. Thanks for posting the up!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-10-07 AT 02:44PM (MST)[p]It means I took a little hair and meat off the top of his back. A couple inches lower may have spined him. He will be running around fine for the muzzleloader and rifle hunters. The arrow hit above the spine and will not cause any permanent damage( there will be a scar). I am sure it smarted a little. Not one of my finest moments as a bow hunter. He will net above the pope and young minimums as both a typical and non-typical but I am not too worried about that.

Saskman

looks to me like you hit that one "a little high" as well. maybe its just the pict. maybe it was a downhill shot.

Just the way he is laying in the photo. Center punched the lungs with a quartering away shot, slightly down hill. Only went about 50 yards. Really quizzing me on my shot placement, why is that?

I didnt think i was quizzing you. Just making an observation. I damn sure wouldnt be telling everyone i grazed a limping buck in the back but thats me. Hows the Lion and whitetail population where you hunt? How many deer can you kill a year?

Cam:

Great shot placement....no explaining needed here. Wounds occur every year in ALL weapon types. Fact of life. Thanks again for posting your photos here for us to enjoy.

Magicmuleys:

I've clipped a few over the years exactly how Cam described.....the bucks were usually seen again feeding and unaffected by the cut. It happens and I respect someone that doesn't "hide" the fact that it occurred. Deer are really a lot tougher than some may think. They are resilient in this area.

BOHNTR )))---------->

I second what BOHNTR said, great shot placement is not always guarenteed with bow or rifle. I don't think there needed to be any judging on this pic. Saskman, congrats on a great muley! Next year when you tag out on the one that got away, you'll have a memory mark on the mounted cape on the wall. Good Luck.

I also clipped my big buck from 2 years ago exactly the same way Cam described he clipped "Limpy". It happens to the best of us whether we all want to admit it or not. Both of us compete at the national level in 3D in Canada so it sure wasnt because we didnt have the skill to get the job done. I was lucky enough to be able to take that same buck 3 days later - Im sure his back was a little sore be he was getting around just fine - just like Limpy is likely getting along just fine now.

Cam is probably the most upstanding and skilled hunter I know - criticizing the fact that he admitted to having a slip up that resulted in a non-fatal shot is just being on a high horse IMO.

criticizing? dont think i was. Just simply said I wouldnt tell everyone about it.

Once again, CONGRATS on a beautiful deer. I always love looking at your posts, either dead huge deer, or live huge deer.

Good luck with the whitey hunting, if your going that is

>criticizing? dont think i was. Just

Why is that? Afraid you would look like a jackass? If you hunt long enough your going to eventually miss or even wound an animal.

Again, great buck Cam! Thanks for the pics

Really? I never would have guessed that when you questioned his shot placement on the deer he did kill.

Gotta love armchair quarterbacks

Sask,
If you hunt long enough, it'll happen to ya more than once in your life. Sometimes $hit happens. Definitely makes for some hard memories to forget about. Sounds like Limpy was a Brute. I hope you can at least snap some pics of him or find his sheds, although, that can make the memories even worse. ;) As for posting the real story, good on ya. I certainly took some major flack on a local site last year when I wounded MassNTrash. I was damn lucky that 3 weeks later I got another crack at him. But not before making the biggest bonehead mistake in my hunting career by forgetting my rifle at home! I could have easily left that info out of the Muley Crazy story but why? Sometimes things screw up. That is a fact of life. Glad you were able to turn it around and put that other 'toad' on the ground.

Congrats Cam! Another good looking buck once again. I'm glad someone has the "balls" to mention the lessons learned along with the success achieved. I know I've had my fair share of mistakes. Great buck!

Congratulations on a great buck! Way to step up and admit that everything does not always go as planned. Things happen and it sounds like you practice a lot to minimize those things from happening.

I don't have a photo but a buddy was hunting there a week or so later and they got some video of him ( I haven't seen it yet). He was back with the same bucks he was with when I shot at him. He said he was moving around just fine. I am hoping to maybe go next weekend to try and get some photos. This area has now been clased as a CWD zone so it will be slaughtered this fall (unlimited free tags for 3 point or less bucks and does and two trophy tags per person). This will start in november. I am not sure why they opened up this zone as I do not know of one positive case of CWD being found in this zone. There have been cases south and one north so I guess they figure there must be some in between. Our good mule deer hunting is slowly being destroyed by our Sask Environment Department. It won't be too many years and you will not be seeing many big bucks coming out of Saskatchewan ( there will be quite a few this year though with the new CWD areas being opened up).

Cam,
Year in and year out you can be counted on to put down the big ones.
You are very fortunate to live in a special place.
No doubt, you have the skills to consistently take big trophy muleys.
No guides, archery gear, and Doing it yourself.
Outstanding, just outstanding.
Congrats on another exceptional trophy.
