Hey guys, I am new to elk hunting, I have hunted deer all my life but this fall will be my first archery elk hunt. I live in Utah and will just be hunting the general bull elk units/season including the extended archery season.

I am looking for any book recommendations on the subject of archery elk hunting that would be helpful for me learning to hunt elk (I will be predominately hunting the wasatch front).

I recently read the Open Country mule deer book by Dwight Schuh and found it very informative and I was wondering if any of you all have read his work on elk hunting entitled, Bugling for Elk: A Complete Guide to Early-Season Elk Hunting?

Is this book any good? do you have another recommendation?

Thanks Guys!

jr8,

I would highly recommend Dwight's Book, Bugling for Elk. The book is older and so are the pictures and the elk calls, but as far as strategy for bowhunting elk from A-Z it is a great book. Gear has changed but basic good bowhunting elk strategies are the same. From scouting, set up, calling strategies, to meat care, it's a good read. I got it more than 20 years ago when I started bowhunting and it is still the foundation for me when it comes to bowhunting elk.

This bull I shot a year ago fell to the basic strategies learned in Dwight's book.

Jr8,

Go to Elk101.com, Corey Jacobsen has a new DVD coming out called the University of Elk Hunting. It would be another valuable resource.
