I live in East Texas and was thinking about taking my kids out to Texas Mule Deer Country this year to give it a try. I've never hunted Mule Deer so I have no idea where in Texas would be best to go, tactics (stalking, stand), etc. I can't afford a guided hunt but I know Texas has a ton of public hunting ground. Can anyone help?

Good luck. I don't know anything about hunting in Texas but Huntsonora used to live down there. He might be able to point you in the right direction.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-12-07 AT 03:05PM (MST)[p]I live in Abilene, Texas. I don't know about the ton of public land, not for whitetails anyway. Panhandle of the state or far west Texas is where you want to be for muleys. If in your position, I'd be considering putting in for the NM draws next year. I believe there are leftovers each year as well that would be probably just as good, if not better, than the public land your talking about. A guy I knew went to the panhandle last year on public land and didn't see a deer all week.

Also, spot and stalk is the only way to go. Big country when hunting for muleys - you don't want to be confined to one spot sitting in a stand.

Come to New Mexico if you can. I have heard that South of Muleshoe around Morton and Plains there is some good deer hunting. There are some real giants out in those sandhills. No nothing about public land in the area. Can probably find out though.

I grew up in Texas (Abilene) but have been gone for a while now (migrated west AZ)...The Big Bend region used to be good muley country not sure if it still is but if I was a betting man. I have also seen pictures and stories of good deer up in the panhandle eating chilly peppers.. not sure about public land though I worked for a rancher and always hunted his property.

Very little public land here in Texas. Look in the papers for leases available. I hunted the Fort Davis area last year, and didn't see any mature bucks, but there are good ranches in west Texas you can hunt- but it will cost a pretty penny to get on them.

Check the classifieds in the Dallas morning news and the austin american statesman. There's usually a few muley leases available.

Thanks for all the responses. I've read on the TPWD site about Texas having over 1 million acres of public hunting land. Must be hard to find...lol. I've looked up quite a few guided hunts and they're pretty expensive by themselves, then top it off with the trophy fee. What type of gun do y'all recommend for hunting mulies?

Anything from a .243 on up, provided you place your shots right (just like any other critter), will do. I would say that the "ideal" sized guns are in the .270/7mm/30-06 range with the .300 magnums being perfect for taking "any" shot on one.
