I just posted the only report I've gotten on the New Mexico forum under "Gila updates" I think? The just of it: very slow and quiet for the first archery season. There is water everywhere, and not as good elk numbers or bull size from even last year. My bud just got back and his camp went 0 for 3 during the first archery season. He said they had limited chances and nothing very big. Last year during the same hunt they went 2 for 4 with 2 big bulls killed and every one having multiple opportunities. This is the first time in 6 consecutive years that he has drawn this hunt that he did not connect.
The bright side! You have a tag, rain is going to make the second archery season very tough and the cooler nights should have them screaming around the 19th. Or at least I hope so! I also have a tag for the third archery season the 19th - 24th but I drew 16-A. I will be at the snow lake camp ground. I would offer you guys the use of my horses and mule but I have decided not to take them for my hunt. I can barely afford the gas to get there as it is. Keep me posted, my wife also 16-B but for the first rifle hunt.
PM me if you want good luck!
