good luck gettin people on here to talk about that unit... i tried bout 2 weeks agao and never got a single response. I also got a leftover tag for unit 4

the problem is people dont want to help you sometimes when you dont have a lot of posts or people dont know your name or who you are....sad but true. I never saw your post i have been watching....i was deciding between 3 and 4 for deer. So what made you guys get the tag just the numbers of leftover or what?

I have responded to this type of question on unit 4 several times, in case you haven't searched the archives, here are some of my answers.

My experience a couple years ago was they were all down low, I hunted the high country the whole time during second season and after a day or two they had all hit the private land low. You might try the blm land on the western side of the unit. There was usually one buck up high on each mountain but there is so much pressure that you really end up covering some ground to find them.

I hunted 2nd season last year near Black Mountian and the Bears Ears. This area gets a lot of pressure! Even three to four miles in there are a lot of people. More people using horses in this area than you would believe. If I were you I would head for the wilderness area on the east side and pack in that way. Going north out of Steamboat Springs you can follow the Elk River for access to the wilderness area. This looked to be less pressured and better hunting in general. Even without packing in I would hunt that area first. Good Luck.

Very little public land down low where the deer wil be, what little there is will be on the west side. There is a ton of hunters in this unit and a lot of them use horses to get where thay are going. This unit is really overhunted for deer and don't pass up a buck. In 9 days hunting I only saw 2 bucks in 05'on public or private land, compared to another unit in 06 where I passed up 30 bucks and saw probably a total of 50-55 including private land bucks. Elk seemed to be a totally different story. Real easy unit to fill a cow tag and maybe a decent chance at a bull. The idea of hiking away from roads to get away from pressure doesn't work here, there were people EVERYWHERE! Good luck.

thanks 3d, i have archieved and didnt see your posts, but this is a good response. You definatly make me question if i want to get the tag now. Is the 3rd season any different? What about some snow does it change matters any or does it just push them down lower?

When we hunted they had about 6" of snow 10 days before second season, then another 8" 4 days before the season opened, then another 3-4" inches the second or third day of hunting. Then on the seventh day it started snowing and didn't stop for awhile, dumped quite a bit at that point. The bucks had already moved lower by the time we got there. I don't think it stopped snowing long enough to let them move back up at anytime, between the weather and the pressure I would hunt the BLM land on the west side if I went again, but the wilderness area holds some appeal to me because I like the high country.

I would definitely hunt lower if I had a third season tag.

Stay low. In the high country there is more hunters than deer. You will not find anywhere that there has not been a hunter already there.Unless you muzzy hunt or an archery hunter ,the high country in unit 4 is way over hunted.

Thanks for the posts, I've got 2nd season, but what I'm reading from you guys is to stay low, has anybody ever hunted the service berry area in the NW section of Unit 4.

Thanks for the info on this unit. I am planning on buying a Leftover deer license and an OTC elk license.
