My wife drew an wy elk 100 bull tag. I heard it was a good hunt for a 300 class bull. But I don't know where to start. If anyone can share some direction, would be greatly appreciated, she had max points and have been putting in for 31, we do have horses and 4 wheelers.we were going to go now hunting as well.private message me if ya want,I'm not looking for any secret spots.im just wanting to make a good experience for wife and three kids that are excited. To go. Thanks in advance.

Steamboat is a good starting point. Unit is high desert you hunt these elk like you would Antelope. After the first shot it will be a crap shoot. Good thing is, plenty of elk. Don't overlook the sand dunes I have found elk there on numerous occasions.

Plus one!!! Steamboat is a great starting point and a center hub. You can go out in any direction from there and see elk. Hunted it several years ago and hope to hunt it with my boys in the future.

Once you have your maps PM me with your phone nimber and we can talk. Your wife will have a great and fun hunt.

You shouldn't have any problems finding elk from the road during scouting, lots of small 5's and 6's...bigger ones are tough to come by...any area can be as good as the rest. Just get out there and drive around and glass before season...you'll find plenty.

Don't overlook the areas of Cedar and Long Canyons. We found some decent bulls tucked away late in the season while hunting for my daughter's cow in 2011.

I would if I was you. There are some areas out there that are " wilderness research areas" that you can't have a motor vehicle in but there are roads in them that aren't marked with closed signs. That will land you a good fine. These aren't bad places to look either.

Here is a pic of the bull I took in 100 three years ago. If he wasn't broke he would have been 320 but as he sits he is 305.

Also check out chicken springs. That area is loaded with elk, but with people too on the first few days of the hunt.

I'm sitt'in on max points. 100 is on my short list.

Cant wait to hear how it go's for ya elknr .. Best of luck .

Thanks again and nice bull mass n trash. I've got max PTs as well,we will see how it goes.hopefully we can call some bulls in and get one with an arrow before rifle season.

Not too much country out there that's good for calling.Too open. You're better off setting up a blind at a waterhole for archery hunting.

Congrats on the tag, it'll be a fun hunt and a memorable one at that. I had that tag several years ago and decided to bow hunt the last week of September before the rifle hunt started. I called in a few bulls off of Steamboat Mountain, seen plenty of elk and no other bow hunters. I killed a bull that I was able to cut off when it was moving across a sage flat from where I was glassing. I made a few cow calls that brought him into bow range, so don't be without a cow call. There are a lot of cow tags during the rifle hunt which may still be a factor although I don't know what the season structure looks like this year for the rifle hunt. The roads are good if it's dry. The clay in the roads will soak up the water and make getting around tougher if you get any moisture.
