Whats the hardest season to kill a deer?

I just got back from a hunt with nv_hunter with a ML in the rubys. We had a discusion about about what would be the hardest season to hunt. Archery season was what first came to mind but after some thinking we decided that ML was the most dificult due to the fact that the deer are hard horned and are now deep in the trees and are not yet stupid in the rut. I think that a late rifle tag would be the easiest(if there is such a thing as easy) season to kill a nice buck due to the leaves off the trees and the rut in full run. Whats do you guys think??

I would agree that the first Hard Horned until prior to rut are the hardest. Even a huge old buck not on winter range even in rut is pretty hard. Not like the other big bucks these guys are content with a little arse every now and then.

I saw tons of deer during this season and I know I could tag this buck with a muzzleloader. I got within ML range time after time. I wish I did have a ML at time it was so frustrating not being able to seal the deal.

I got within 40 yards of this buck in a juniper grove but it was just too bushy and he spooked. With a ML he would have been toast.

Im my limited experience I would have to say the hardest hunt has to be an early bow tag in the rubies. It is hot, you are either trying to hunt wide open sage or super thick quakee thickets and those deer are spooky like I have never seen a deer. But I have never hunting with a ML so I cant say for sure, what I do know is that I dont think that there is any easy way to hunt those bucks up there. The elk in that area are a different story

LAST EDITED ON Sep-17-07 AT 12:29PM (MST)[p]my hardest hunt was definitly rifle season in idaho. they brought out the elk on a string and let him feed at the corn feeder. then i petted the massive 500" elk and BAMMO!!! i droped him there. i felt like the luckiest hunter ever. i'd have to say that the rifle elk penned-up hunts are the hardest cause sometimes they just aren't hungry and you have to wait in the lodge!! just irratating!!! haha (all sarcastic)

i think that in utah archery is still the hardest hunt. alot of MM'ers could have slammed a great buck if only our range was extended out to 150-200 yards.

beat this

I have hunted archery for the past five years and I have wished several times that I had a ML but after this ML hunt in the rubys I would say that Ml is just as hard if not harder to kill a big buck! Hard to kill a big buck if you never get to see him. I hunted hard for 8 days and only saw two real toads. Both disapeared at the slightest light in the sky. Once they were in the trees I never saw them again. ML is easy to kill a buck but not a big buck. Late rifle has to be the best odds for a big bruiser.

Archery-easiest time to find a whopper but hardest time to kill him. Its the stick and string thing.

Early October can be the hardest time to find a whopper but high powered rifles make the killing part a hell of alot easier. Some deer that were easy a heck to find in velvet turn into rocks for the next month or so.

These generalities apply to most heavily hunted public land and not so much to limited entry hunt areas and private land where mongo deer haven't recieved PhD's in hunter evasion and eluding.

Of course thats just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Where I hunt, the ML is the overall hardest hunt.(To find the bucks anyway) Oh we have all seen the big boys during the archery hunt wishing we had a muzzle loader but when the ML hunt finally rolls around where did he go? Getting within ML range during the archery hunt is routine but sealing the deal with a bow is dang tough to do. I guess getting him with your bow is probably the greatest challenge for me. If I am lucky enough to find the big uns during the ML hunt it's game over!(I just rarely find them:))

LAST EDITED ON Sep-19-07 AT 08:59AM (MST)[p]In my experience Spring is the hardest season to kill a buck. Sometimes they only have one antler left, if that, the rest of the time you are trying to decide whether or not it is just a big bodied doe you are looking at. That and the fact that they don't sell permits for the spring time and unless you want to be a poacher, it makes it pretty hard. Plus, it is very hard to score a spring time buck.

Truthfully I would say it varies depending on the region, the weapon choice and the hunting pressure.
Rifle is generally the easiest, but late rifle or ML can even easier if it is in the rut. Overall I would say it is archery.
