I have an elk dilema!

I drew two great elk tags (not complaining), one in Arizona unit 27 archery and just got drawn for Nevada 231 early rifle bull after 18 years of applying. I can't turn in the Arizona tag but the Nevada tag I can. I never thought I would draw Nevada ever and I'm a resident and after waitng 18 years! The hunting times are not the problem, I have to time off, finances for one of the guided hunts is planned, but, it's that I wanted to go guided for both, knowing that these were both once in a lifetime tags (age). What would you do? I'm also possibly looking for a guide for Nevada unit 231. Know anyone? Kerry

In your Shoes I'd Finance it if I had to!

This Crap only comes around Twice in a long while!

The Bulls Ain't gettin No Bigger & We ain't gettin No Younger!

THINK: HUNT!

THINK: HUNT!

You can work on payin for it Later!:D

The Dew I had for Breakfast wasn't Bad so I had one more for Dessert!:D

Yeah, my dad drew 2 as well. He drew the early Manti in Utah and then drew an early 076,081 tag in Nevada. Took him 15 yrs. to get the Utah tag and 5 here in Nevada. He had a Nevada tag in 2003, but unfortunately didn't get one. The Nevada tag runs right through the late archery deer tag we drew. He is 60 yrs. old and he says he is keeping both. Both will be unguided. Here we go. Going to be busy. I agree with the other posts on here. Make both of them happen. Only live once. Go for it. Good luck to you.

nyguy2, that's a really neat elk hunt your dad drew in 076,081. I helped a buddy who had that tag a few years ago and we had a great time. Saw lots of elk and some big bulls in pronghorn country. If fact, we saw decent numbers of pronghorns while elk hunting. We hunted in the southern portion of the unit, and saw some nice bulls. We were told that the northern end of the unit group tends to have better bulls than the southern end.

I'd consider hunting the one most doable by yourself or the one you can get friends to help on easiest without a guide.

I'm sitting on 3 elk tags now! NV Jarbidge muzz bull, AZ 10 late rife bull, and WY GEN. I might consider not going to WY if I end up hunting NV till the bitter end, but no way is my NV tag going back! I'm lucky enough to be pretty fammiliar with my AZ and NV areas...

HOLY CRAPOLA MICK.......THATS A GREAT PROBLEM TO HAVE.....YOU MUST BE LIVING RIGHT. GREAT LUCK TO YOU.......WANT TO HEAR ALL ABOUT BOTH HUNTS DOWN THE ROAD.....................YD.

Why do you think you have to go guided? Rut hunts? I would go DIY with those tags, maybe if you had a wilderness tag where you needed horses, or are disabled, but otherwise it won't be hard to find elk.

Outdoordan, the Nevada early rifle bull tag he's talking about is not a rut hunt. I have the exact same tag this year and it is an early November hunt. The Arizona unit 27 archery tag is a rut tag, and a darned good one.

It's kind like having two hot girls how do you pick, You don't right, You only go around once so DO THEM BOTH.

Actually, I may have to talk myself into both of them. Looking at guides now. Have called one of the ones already. Thanks

You have been blessed with an opportunity that you will regret not pursuing so I would try to figure out how to hunt both. They could both be hunts of a lifetime. I know nothing about NV but AZ 27 after the fire has been producing some GREAT bulls and lots of them.
I wish you the best in coping with your dilemma.LOL

FYI
The az. goveners tag will be in #27 loking for a bull that might hit 500. just so you know.

Push him over to Unit 15 in NM for me please!!!

Wow, that's really interesting. A bull pushing 500".... in MAY?!?!

Last time I checked, at this time of year bulls are lucky if they have 50" total antler growth, let alone 500!

i hunted 231 rifle bull but its been excatly 10 years ago. A DIY hunt there is very doable, and doable in a weeks time or less. I would just do the 231 hunt myself. check with Thomas Brunson of Timberline Outfitters Guide Service, i think he may guide there, he has an ad on here for NV, he is top notch for sure!! Thats who i would be calling if i was going guided!!

It's pretty easy to give advice on this without knowing all your circumstances, so I would say make sure you do what is best for YOU and not what might be best for the rest of US.
I had an LE deer tag in Utah and Nevada one year. I assumed I could do them both, but when push came to shove I didn't have the time or the finances to do either one justice. Besides I left my wife home with a new baby and it almost cost me my marriage. In the end I ended up with two "meat bucks".
I wish you the best and hope you kill two great bulls. One great bull would be fantastic also. I mean where are you going to hang two big old "stinkies"?

I'll find places to hang them both if I get lucky enough. I think my wife gave me approval to go for it. (It seems like it?)So I'll be looking for guides for both hunts. So if you have a favorite please give me info so I can contact them. Thanks again.

I don't think Thomas is licensed in 231.I know he's not for deer.If I am correct about that(I would call Thomas for sure),try Greg Krogh.I know he guides in 231.

If you're going to go guided, check with Mark Lane, who owns White River Guide Service. Also, Shane Stever, who owns Purple Sage Outfitters.

I'm going DIY, but if I were going guided, one of those two are who I'd probably hire.

Greg Krough is also excellent.

I pulled the 76-79, 81 archery tag. So fired up but not sure where to start.

I cannot argue against Greg Krough. I know from personal experience talking with him, that he is a classy and respectable fellow. He helped me out on a hunt when he did not need to at all. He had nothing to gain, but was helpful nonetheless. That impressed me, and I've never forgotten it.

GREG KROUGH
Now I think he can do both of your hunts(NV&AZ) and you might get a package deal from him. He helped us one year, by telling where to find a few bulls and he didn't have too or ask for anything in return.

Thomas Brunson is licensed to guide everything in 231, including deer and elk. Disregard the post above. He typically guides the units closer to Ely, but he's killed some good bulls down in 231 as well.

Thanks for correcting me.My bad.I've hunted with Thomas a couple times for deer and wasn't sure if he hunted 231.You can't go wrong with Thomas!

A few of your suggestion for outfitter where a great help. I have called 5 of them. A few of them were totally booked up as of Monday. I've made my choice and hopefully picked the right guide. Called a few references and made my decision for an outfitter. Thanks again for all of your assistance.

Dilemmas, Dilemmas,What to do? I say forget Az.! Our elk here suck! By the way did I say I drew the Mzl. tag for 27! Oh and by the way I live in 27 and the odds are really good a new world record is going to come from here and I just wish I had the money to buy it like the governors tag, O well I'm hoping I can settle for one of the many 400 bulls we have running around here. Also for your info they know about this big bull because a local picked up the sheds this spring and sold the rights to MSB so unless it dies of a heart attack or is poached or god forbid gets broken you'll hear about it. Good luck on your decision.

Mickey who did you get. PM

It's easy!
Keep them both and I'll trade my OTC Ut spike tag for either one! It's a big win/win....except I'd win a little more!

OK, back to reality.
I'd keep them both IF your wife and work will tolerate it BUT you have to be willing to commit to 100% on both hunts, which will be tough to do (physically, financially, mentally).
Something like this only happens once...or twice, ever, so have fun no matter what you do!

This will be interesting!

I have somewhat the same dilemma.

I drew my Limited Elk tag for unit 45 in Wyoming this fall. Having never hunted this area before, I am behind the program on where to hunt it.

I still have two weeks of last years vacation to use up before the end of August so am taking the time to go and scout the unit out. Driving out from Michigan with a cargo trailer is costly, didn't plan or budget that money for the year. Of course, being single, it's easy for me to make that decision......

That being said, I don't know how many years I have left in the mountains to chase Elk. I don't know when I'll draw an Elk tag like this again. I owe it to myself, and my buddy joining me in October, to do whatever I can to ensure our success by applying proper amounts of boot leather....

So, like the others have stated, find a way to pay for it now, they will print more money in the future, but you might not have a chance to draw that tag again!

GO HUNTING!

Here is my thoughts on the AZ tag.

If you want to enjoy the hunt and shoot a good bull, look into Mullins, Scott and Colburn, Steve Chappel or Dwayne Adams.

If you want the guide to hold your hand and all you do is pull the trigger on a giant bull so you can brag to your friends, then book mossback.

I wouldn't use mossback if it was free.

I have a couple of friends that have done well in that area with Mitch Buzzetti at Nevada High Desert Outfitters. One was a draw tag and one was bought and they saw a ton of animals a great guys.We are using him for our 081 deer hunt in December.
