Is there anyone on here who has had this tag? Wondering how it was and what was harvested? Or if anyone knew someone that had the tag? My buddy dre the tag but I am a little leery about how good it is? Any info would be much much appreciated because I might tell him to turn the tag back in as much as we wouldn't want to

I have no idea about the hunt, but he obviously put in for the tag (more than likely as his FIRST choice). Why turn it back in?

However; if he does turn it in I'm sure someone will gladly take it.

he has a friend that puts in for the late hunt on the pahvant and does well, so he thought the san juan would be the same but its def not, im finding more info on it and its not terrific, he has 18 points so to me its a no brainer, he doesnt know the units to well so he just went off a freinds advice to put in for the late hunt, sounds like his friend thought the pahvant late hunt would be the same as the san juan late

I wish Utah would get rid of this crap of turning tags back in. You put in for the unit and draw the tag you better damn well hunt it! Having said that I wouldn't waste 18 points on any late season hunt.

I would keep the tag and hunt it.

Yeah there is a few things I would like to see changed with utah but he is lucky he has that option from taking bad advice,I would not want to burn 18 points on a late hunt iether

With 18 points that means he's had at least 18 years to get to know the unit and season he wants to hunt. Getting bad advice is a poor excuse...especially with 18 points.

I have hunted the SJ late hunt the last 3 years and also hunted the archery elk hunt last year with my own tag in my pocket :) Brother drew the late hunt 3 years ago and two of my friends the last 2. All 3 of them hunted with Black Timber Outfitters and all 3 killed good bulls! That being said, this is one tough hunt! People think Southern Utah and don't realize that this is a high elevation hunt (some areas over 11,000' elev, many over 9000'). Plan on wind, snow, and COLD!!! In my honest opinion this hunt is not for the faint of heart. Very few really big bulls are killed on this hunt in comparison to the earlier hunts. If he is sold on this hunt, give Blandingboy here on MM a pm and look up Black Timber Outfitters. I personally wouldn't do this hunt without them! Feel free to pm me or better yet have your buddy pm me. I would be happy to help any way I can. Sliverslinger400

According to Eastman,s the success rate in 2010 was 87% and 2011 was 100%. I believe 2012 was 92%. I would hunt it. My father in-law drew a late season tag on Mt. Dutton one year and shot a 385 bull. I have known quite a few hunters that had early season pahvant and early Dutton. His was the biggest by far. I guess what I am saying is there will be a big bull out there for your buddy.
