Planning a deer hunt in Idaho just wanted some places to get a good map. I have some maps but they are old

Thanks

All my maps are from Topozone.com Of course, you have to have a general area picked out first.

you can also check out the fish and game website at fishandgame.idaho.gov. Check out the huntplanner feature. It has maps and detailed info about the units and even the access yes earlies where you can hunt on private land

sportsmans warehouse has a computer you can print good topo maps. I think they are about 10bucks or so. They ones I have are just topo maps they don't show ownership.

If you are planning on hunting BLM lands, get the surface management maps from the BLM state office in Boise, their price is the cheapest and they take a credit card over the phone. If you will be hunting forest, just call the ranger district and order it over the phone the same way.

This is the sweet thing about the PLIC it sets you up with the BLM, Forest Service, etc maps for the area you intend to hunt. Then when you are ready for topo stuff that is for a small area of the big area you can do the topozone or go to the USGS site and get what you need there.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-27-07 AT 11:01AM (MST)[p]You should figure out where you want to hunt first and go to you nearest forest service office to get a BLM map. This should give you little bit of topography for the area. You can then zoom in by using a USGS quad to get a better picture of trails and terrain. I like to back up an area with Google earth to get a better feel for the vegetation in an area. Sometimes you can't tell on there but many times you can tell if it is open or not, or has been burned or not.

Also be aware of all of the fires that we had this season (over 2 million acres burned this summer). I heard that some of the units are being closed because the fires have funneled game into one small area, or ran them out of an area completely.

I think USGS.gov can send you a quad for a fee of any area you request.

A word of caution about quads though, they are usually out of date with open versus timbered terrain, roads, trails, etc. but are very good for topography.
