Wy unit 38-9

Got lucky and drew a 38 type 9 tag like everyone else in the country. Any areas to look into or steer clear. One thing I can't stand is being around other hunters so I'm ready to hike. Not looking for hot spots but some general idea on where most of the hunters go, where the elk move to, waterholes or wallows. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

There are 350 tags for that hunt, so you'll definitely have company unless you really get back in deep off the roads and that sounds like your style. If you're up to it, I'd do a bivy hunt as far as you can get away from the roads to get into some good bulls that should be making noise the better part of the month up in the highest part of the unit.

You drew 38 archery elk and 34 deer? Please tell me you are a resident. : ). How many points did you have?

Congrats. I've never been to 34, but you should have no trouble finding elk in 38 in sept....

Was a little unsure of my choices cause I have heard both good and bad, and especially since I drew them all (like really who draws all 3 first choices). But you all made it a little easier feeling after hearing they were good units.

Hi, My name is Lonnie and I have been hunting the area you are asking about for the last seven years. Drawed my elk tag in 2011 after 7 years trying. took a 5 x 5 on the second day of bow season. Unit 38 is a very good unit for elk, also for deer which is what I hunted waiting to draw my elk tag. If you need some info I will be happy to help. I live in ohio and have been traveling out to Wyoming for several years and the locals have always been nice and helpful so I will return the favor if I can.
