My cousins and I have a packin elk hunt booked for Wyoming in late sept. We need personal water purifiers and know nothing about them. any suggestions on something simple and good......brand and model. Thanks for any suggestions.

I like the sawyer. Its extremley light weight. It does take a touch longer then some pumps but you don't have to worry about filters clogging because you can back flush.just make sure to take an extra bag with you. I havent had on break yet but better safe then sorry specially sense they weigh virtually nothing. http://www.sawyer.com/ heres the link

I am using a 3-way inline Sawyer with a Platypus Big Zip. It weighs 2 oz. Basically, you filter as you drink or gravity fill your cooking cup. It works good, and it is light weight for backpacking.

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the info.....I will do the product research and make a purchase.
Thanks for the trouble Again!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-13 AT 12:51PM (MST)[p]You have to decide if each person should have a filter and if so, should that filter be the same or different?

I see all kinds of pros and cons to this question. I think each should have something and different is fine, maybe one good hi flow easy to use filter and one smaller compact lighter. If you will be together the whole time and go with one, some tablets might be a good thing to have just in case.

I tried to save a few ounces on my last elk hunt and regret the decision to leave my Pro Hiker at home, I tried to go with just a Steripen UV filter (worked great), but I had some water that really needed filtered because of rains and runoff.

The sawyer filter is 3" long. Weighs next to nothing Fits on regular water bottles you can buy at the store, is easy to clean, lasts for 1 million gallons or more, can be screwed on to bags to squeeze fresh water into other receptacles. They can be added inline to a hydration bladder. There are also similar filters by aquamira. These filters will make pumps obsolete in the future, because of there size, ease of use, multiple uses, etc.

Why pump or filter?

I use a bit of noseeum netting to prefilter, and use a Steripen to treat the water. Small, incredibly lightweight and fast.

Steripen has worked great for me.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-13 AT 07:52PM (MST)[p]+1 for the steripen!!!! I've drank 100's of gallons of creek water, spring water, and everything in between and I've never had a problem. I really didn't like my filter bottle but that's just my oppinion.

...and it only takes about a minute per liter to sterilize.

It's always an adventure!!!

I think I paid around $100 for it but it's worth every penny.

It's always an adventure!!!

I've used the Katadyn Hiker/Pro many times on different occasion.
On pack trips for up to a week, filling water for scouts, or for huntin'
buddies. They work great, and have had no issues of illness, or any problems
or issues with them. Just had a buddy buy one to go up to Red Castle. We'll
keep you posted on how he likes his.

I've used the SteriPen for a number of years. While I like it, it does have some drawbacks - first is the battery life, even if you use the Lithium batteries, and second is that you have to hold it for a couple minutes per 2 liters of water. The Sawyer in-line filter is really convenient. I've used both on numerous pack in hunts and long distance backpack trips and like them both.

If you go the Steripen route, bring a Gatorade bottle. The top of the Gatorade bottle holds the steripen perfectly, freeing your hands up to do other chores (make dinner, set up camp, etc.), since it takes two minutes to filter 2 liters of water.

Lastly, I'd recommend carrying a bottle of either iodine tablets or the slower working sodium chloride as a backup. Bring some powdered Gatorade or Nuun tablets to mask their taste.

I switched from the Hiker Pro to the Sawyer this year to save weight.

It has worked perfectly so far. I love having a filter that weighs only 3 ounces, but will still take the Hiker Pro in areas that I may be forced to drink out of a trough or wallow, as the Sawyer doesn't have a carbon filter.

PS. Tristate, please be an adult and respect my wishes that you do not respond to any of my posts. I, in turn, will do you the courtesy of not responding to any of yours. I simply do not wish to converse with you.

You need the steripen prefilter bottle holder thing. It works great with open mouth nalgenes and there is no need to wait around for it to work.

Buddy came back from Red Castle. LOVED using his new Hiker Pro, pumped water from a spring for 3 guys for 3 days. I'd get a Steripen just from what other guys are saying too. I probably will now too
