Oregon Hunters

The rifle season started last saturday, lets hear the stories. I am heading to the Steens Saturday for the last 5 days of the season. I will let you all know how it goes.

Backpacked out about 3 miles. Got to where I wanted to be before daylight. Waited for daylight. Shot a little 3x3 about 17" wide. Then watched the hunters swarm in around us. Just like I expected.

My plans worked out. I was hoping to catch one of the 3 4-points we saw this summer, but with the limited public land in the Maupin unit and the high # of tags, the hunt was just as I expected.

First time that I have ever shot a buck right from my spotting point on the first morning of the hunt. Not much of a buck, but some meat for us and some good time spent with Dad----as my father has fought through some medical issues this year, it has become easier to remember what is most important. Hope everybody else got to spend some successful time with others afield---deer or no deer.

Happy hunting.

Shane

Well I didn't do so good. I backpacked into the Minam Unit/Eagle Caps about 7 miles and we got so much snow on Friday we came out early thinking we would get stuck. We were at about 7600' feet. Suppose we should have toughed it out but couldn't even really hunt it was so socked in. Might try and go back this weekend and try again - hate getting beat by the weather. The horse guys had it made - they are probably finding some good hunting by now.

Happy to hear that you were able to hunt with your Dad after what he went through.. You are right on the money when you said that about what is most important. My Dad died 10 years ago and the deer hunts have never been the same..
I would love to be able to go on one more hunt with my Dad.
Glad you had a good hunt and you got a buck.. Congrats..
