hey everyone my grandpa put in for the wrong hunt. We are familiar with the south side but not with the north. He can still get around pretty good but cant hike for days looking for any information. I have been up scouting around the franklin basin area with no luck not looking for a giant just something for him to shoot at at 76 years old he says he is going all out and might be his last hunt and I want to make it a good one thanks for any information

LAST EDITED ON Jul-08-13 AT 09:36AM (MST)[p]To be totally honest, I think your grandpa has a very tough challenge ahead. It's very difficult to see elk on the North Cache from any established road - and most of the area is roadless and very rough even on foot. Unless you can get him on a horse or away from the roads a mile or so, I think the odds of success are pretty slim.

Which hunt did he draw? I know the unit very well and had [a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFcDliUNLHA"]an awesome N. Cache hunt[/a] a few years back. I'd be happy to help how I can.

I spend a ton of time on the N. Cache and I agree with apollosmith. I have only seen a few good 6 points and they were in nasty places a long ways from any roads. Some big bulls have been shot on the North Cache but they are few and far between. If you have access to horses the hunt might be doable.

If he had a lot of points I would seriously consider turning the tag back in and saving his points for the South Cache or a different LE unit. If you have any questions or anything feel free to PM me.

I give a +1 to everyone's comments so far. My buddy has an archery tag this year so we have spent a ton of time up there so far this summer and it's looking pretty scarce.

It's a crazy tough unit to find a bull in. I agree if he had many points at all I may consider turning the tag back in. At the same time however, you never know which season may be your last one and as your grandpa gets older it may be fun to hunt while he can still get around well. Use horses, get way back in and have a good time together!

thanks for all the info so far. it is the early tag he has and he is pretty sent on doing the hunt i would prefer he turned the tag in but he says no way lol . I do have friends with horses and i know that's the way to go IMO but gramps is not liking that idea maybe when the time get's closer he will change his mind. He likes to ride his 4-wheeler a lot but not to many trails or overlooks. He really wants to find a water hole or overlook that he can sit at thanks for all the info
