Scoring Elk?

After learning from Steve Chappell over the years and looking over hundreds of elk photos on Facebook and the net, I put together a simple photo of field judging bulls...

That'll Work!

But Damn!

Sometimes it's Hard/Not Time to measure/Guess the Length of each Point!

This Story happens alot it's True!
But Ya Best Hope it don't ever happen to you!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-12-13 AT 04:19AM (MST)[p]That's called the Block 200 method...... I first heard it presented by Steve Chappell quite a few years ago.... Gets you close but like Bess says it's a lot of calculating... :)...... I'm more of an instinctive scorer..... Terry

It's a great reference point. And a lot of times you do have time to actually score an animal. Other times it may just be "WOW!." And other times you may not be in a unit that has trophy potential anyways.

I've had this method explained to me before but a picture is worth a 1000 words.

Thanks

being able to judge tine length is great, in my experience though you often don't have a lot of time and have to make a snap decision. Like said above that is where you have to just take a quick look and guess a range of + or - 10".

I don't get to hunt low pressured, high density, high quality units though so it is different there than hunting OTC units in the thickest crap elk can find to get away from hunters...

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

Thanks for the info, I am still trying to learn how to score bulls. Is that the bull you killed on Extreme Bulls that bedded right in front of you?
