Well...after 7 actual days of hunting the Books, I shot one on the last morning of the hunt. As has been said before, the Books is a fun hunt. Tons of deer, but not a monster behind every tree. I covered a ton of ground and only saw a handful of decent bucks while spotting/hiking/driving. The deer were already migrating and I never was able to find any of the bucks I saw scouting prior to the season.

Hey, that is still a pretty nice buck. Congratulations on a fun and successful hunt. I hope to get out and do that hunt again some year!

Smokepole

Nice hunt.. That is a big unit and would be hard to keep track of a buck for very long, especially when they start moving..
Congrats!

Everyone seems to forget that the bookcliffs is clearly described as "not a trophy unit". That said, you got a really good deer there! Congratulations! I love shooting'em with smokepoles too... soo much fun.

I'm guessing yours is around 26" wide right?

Looks like Monument Ridge? I did see many deer last week on the winter range. Not too many nice bucks though. They are moving just a touch early this year, should make a good rifle hunt.

Dude that is him! If that is where we spoke of, I'm 99% sure that is the buck that gave us the slip opening morning.

Ok...here's the story. Last week went up to the books on Monday and stayed till Sat. Morning. Saw a ton of 18-22" deer and a ton of does. The deer were without question on the move. You'd see a line of +6 deer in a line heading north. Saw probably 3 deer that first week that were +28", but had no height to their racks at all, so I passed on them. Lots of big 2 points and 3 points. Typical 4 points like I shot with any size are not as common. I was hunting up top not too far from the towers. Met BigPig and his brother while up the first week. Good guys for sure.

Headed back out Tues morning to hunt Tues night through the close of the season on Thurs night. Hit a different area then the first week...Yes BP...near the area we talked about. Saw some deer Tues and Wed but nothing to pull the trigger on.

Thurs morning we headed out and decided to cover as much ground as possible, spotting as we go. Spotted a "shooter" buck a longs ways off on in another canyon.

Wind was blowing hard from the south and the buck was to our north. We had to go way south down into a draw and work our way up over the ridge that the buck was on to loop east and north of him to get up wind and to cut them off. We made the big counter clockwise loop and setup to cut the deer off. We hadn't sat down for 5 mins just off the top of the ridge, when three does came through. I was afraid I had missed the buck. Just then we see a another group of deer in the brush only 80yrs away. It ended up being 4 bucks. Two small and two nice. The deer were on a path that would put them under 60yrds in front of us. We did not spot these deer prior to setting up, we only knew of one decent buck that was with three does. The first deer through was a big 4x3. I almost took a shot, but knew the deer I had spotted was a 4x4. Next deer through was a small 3x3...third deer...BAM. As soon as I saw him step out I pulled the trigger. He was quartering downhill a bit the shot hit him higher in the shoulder and went in towared his spine/neck. He was dead in mid air.

Over all I'm happy with the hunt. Spent almost the whole hunt looking for something to shoot and finally found him on the last morning. It was cool that the hunt was a textbook stalk that actually worked out and I didn't shoot him from the road as I imagine most of the bucks are up there (at least a few of the ones I saw while on the hunt where). I was a little surprised not to see more deer with some size to them. Its a really fun hunt with lots of deer, but as earlier said...don't expect a lot of really big deer.

Just dropped the cape off at Paul Pennies to get mounted up. Should look good!

I haven't put a tape to him but he's right around 26" and probably 165-170 range...not that it really matters to me. It's the biggest mulie I have taken so far.

Thanks!!

Thanks again!

Any suggestions for a meat processor around Sandy/Salt Lake?

I don't want to take it to Clay Meyers and don't have the time to do it myself.

Thanks!

Hey gdog, that's the one i told you got away from us!!! hehehe
Great job buddy, glad you found a good one out of all those "rat's"!!

That is a beautiful buck! I would love to put one like that on the ground - congratulations.

ok ive got a stupid question for all you guys. when you speak of the book cliffs are you talking colorado or utah?

LAST EDITED ON Oct-05-07 AT 05:35PM (MST)[p]Utah, dnd. And not a stupid question if you're not from Utah.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-05-07 AT 08:33PM (MST)[p]gdog,

Carson's Meats in American Fork does cutting and wrapping. You will get your animal back.

I think 165-170" is pretty conservative? Paul will make that buck look great!

Again, great buck!

gdog:

Great patience and a nice buck to end up with on the last day of the hunt.

I'm in the books quite a bit and would say that your buck is above the average that you see down there. Wouldn't disagree with you when you said there's not a monster behind every tree down there. Monsters are pretty few and far in the past recent years for the books. The area behind you looks pretty familiar. PM me if you get a chance and let me know if I am correct on where you were.

My Congrats!

Great buck and story! I think he may score a little better than 170 though, closer to 180.
Thanks for sharing.
Jeff

The color of the horns and cape are unreal gdog! That is about as good looking of a buck that I remember!

Man, sweet buck and one I'd be very proud of. Congrats on a great deer and what sounds to be an awesome hunt!

Well...I guess it's now time to start in on those elk points. Should be around 90 by the time I draw!!!

I was glad to be done last Thurs. and really happy to get a deer, but today I finally picked up all my crap from the hunt that was piled in the garage....and I want to go back out!!!

Time to get serious on the grouse, chukar and coyotes....

Looking forward to seeing some big Books Cliffs deer from the rifle hunt...make sure to post up pics!!!

KTC...thanks on the suggestions for Paul and Carsons...appreciate the help.

We hunted the books last year and that is a great buck. we were hard pressed to see bucks like that. Saw a few but not many big ones. congrats!
