Big Sheds I Restored

These have been chalky and collecting dust for two years and I finally got off my but and restored them. After taling to my taxidermist, I ended up sanding them down, latex painting them and then staining/sanding/staining to get the ivory effect. I rubbed a little dirt on them too to get dull the glossy finish too. I think they turned out pretty well.

I wish they were a real match. The right antler scores over 100" typical by itself. Their bases and eyeguards are close enough I may still mount them together.

Looks pretty good!!
I'm right in the middle of restoring two sets myself, one set is a 220"ish buck and the other is 235"ish. Both will go onto skulls when i'm done.

Do you have "before" pictures. I would be very interested in how to do the restoration if you care to share tips and procedures?

Old pics I posted a year ago but they were solid white and a little chalky in a few places. As far as the restoration went, I sanded the loose stuff off, painted a coat of white latex. Sanded again and used the paint to fill the minor cracks. Then I stained them with Minwax Special Walnut a few coats (heavier around the bases todarken the burrs and brows more). I also rubbed some dark dirt on them to knock the shine from the stain. It was pretty fun and when held up to my other deer they look pretty good!

Wire brush or sand the flakey stuff off.

Use brown shoe polish and rub that down with old Levi material. Retouch as necessary.

Resand tips to plain white for that ivory effect.

Spray with Deft semi-gloss and your'e done.

I still recommend you use a white primer or latex paint to seal the cracks and rough spots. When you apply the stain or polish they don't look nearly as natural as smooth horn.
