If I'm reading the regs correctly, you can shoot a "spike bull" if he has at least one antler that does not branch above the ears. So if you find a bull with just a brow tine on one side, he would be considered a "spike"?

Oh I know Bessy, I got on a herd tonight that had a 6pt, with just a brow tine on the other side. He stood broadside at 35 yards, I wasn't sure on the rule, now I'm kicking myself.

Maybe I should have done like they do in the basin huh Bessy, shoot first, ask questions later?

They never ask later, LOL

I was stopped at a check point a few years ago on the spike hunt and one of the DWR cops told me that even if it has a brow on both sides you can shoot it. Because they can potentially hide those with their ears.? Just as long as one side doesn't branch above the ear then it is legal.

We passed on a GIANT 6x1 with a big club several years ago not knowing the rule....boy do I wish Id see him again.

"A ?spike bull? is a bull elk that has at least one antler that
does not branch above the ears. A branch is a projection
on an antler that's longer than one inch, measured from
its base to its tip (R657-5-2(2)(s))."

Interesting - "at least one" antler that doesn't branch.

So, if we had a good looking 6x6 that also had a spike coming out of his forehead, does the law say we can shoot him?

The way i interpret it, we can. Right? He has one antler that doesn't split above the ears?

I think you found a loop hole. Now go find that bull with 3 main beams.

Here is a bull that my cousin and I saw often when he had his LE archery tag a few years ago. He was a spike/club on one side and a 3 point/club on the other. I know a bunch of spike hunters were after him.

Got a 7x1 with a brow tine a few years back. Had a branch bull tag though. :)

This would have qualified then according to that loop hole... He is a 6x6x1, 3 seperate antlers.

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

I saw a bull last year that was a 5 point on the left side and had 3 separate spikes on the left. One went straight forward and the other two went straight up side by side... I think you guys are saying I could have shot him?
