BUCK BULL COMBO FLOPPPPPPPP!!!

i'll give the abridged hunt version.

we got on the back side of the front and found 5 bucks, busted us and ran over the ridge, we gave chase. couldn't find them. that was ok because i spotted 3 more bucks. one was a big 4 about 22 wide dep forked. we got as close as we could. about 350 yards he shot with his 270. first shot hit below his feet. second shot hit high in the front left leg (not fatal) buck runs toward us, downhill. two more shots as the buck runs down and to our left but both misses. finally all three bucks group together and i tiell jake that his buck is the one in the middle and to shoot. he steadies and fires and the bruin drops. we got so excited. we watched him for about 5 minutes deaming him immobile and likely dead(the last time we saw him he was upside down not moving) we hustled down the shear cliff adge and moved quickly to where we thought he was. we made it to the right spot but the light ran out on us and with flashlights in hand we couldn't find the buck. we prayed, but the answer came that we should get out of there. so after shooting the buck around 6:30 we looked till 8:30 and decided to come back the next morning. we got back around 8 yesterday morning(tuesday) and searched for 4 more hours. it started slowly snowing and the jeep was parked in a hell-hole so we, with sick stomachs left without finding the big buck.

one of the worst feeling. but with such a great shot and another imobilizing his front leg do you think he could hae gone anywhere? any help would be great.

Agreed. And next time you have an animal "down" and there is two of you, have one person stay and glass the "dead animal" and the other go over to the kill site. This way in case it isn't really dead, but just dazed you can see where he runs off to....

I sure hope your buddy cut his tag and your not out trying to do this again. You only give it 6 hours worth of looking?? I agree with what has been said this far 2 guys one stays while the other walks in and finds! Also pack a lunch. Yes every one has lost animals but only 6 hours of looking did you find blood hair bone? come on man not the abridged version on this type of story sorry for going off but that is a waist of a deer in my opinion. have you went back? Or is it just cyote bait?

i'm gateful for the advise and suggestions, but being on a cliff ledge, and the dangers of leaving one up top to watch as the other scaled down and having the light run out on us just wasn't an option. we searched that night for 2 hours with what little light was left and then we broke out the MAG lights and kept on looking. the next day we went back in and started high, sweeping down the entire mountainside but found nothing. i know the buck has to be there. neither one of us could take today off and keep looking, and the weather turned nasty anyway, but we are planning on tomorrow. he is still hunting though because he has his elk tag left to fill. but as far as the deer goes, that tag is as good as punched. anyone that wants to look for the buck PM me and i'll give you the cordinates. it is still just making me sick. the buck just dropped, more like slammed, to the ground. don't know why he is missing.

eagle thanks for clearing that up I understand much better now sorry for going off earlier about that but you hear so many stories of I or my buddy hit a real nice buck and couldn't find it but he ended up killing a lesser buck so it's ok.....

in my mind 4X4elk, the tag is punched once a shot is fired. if that animal runs around even with a superficial wound, my or those i hunt with hunts are considered over. unless we hunt for that specific buck. its actually how alot of alaskan guides work. but i thank the person that offered his help in finding the buck.

Here comes one of those old guys who "thinks he knows it all". I teach a LOT of hunter ed classes. First thing I don't want to hear is that one of my students was involved in a shooting; second any kind of poaching; third is this.

I shot an elk with a muzzleloader a few years ago. I pushed too hard, too soon. My mistake. I tracked from 8 AM until 4:30 the NEXT afternoon...about 8 miles and 3 canyons. It was my responsibility.

Hunters MUST take the responsibility...or stay home. That responsibility is to bring the dead ones home. I, too, lost one once. It was 30+ years ago and I looked all evening and for the next two days.

gb22, what exactly do you think "this" is?
