good day to all, new member. i will be heading out to cody, wy again this year, hunting the public near south fork road. last year we had a 30 yard encounter with a grizz, hopefully not this year. anybody have any updates on this area? or any "hints" to hunting here. lsat year i shot a 5 x 4, 19" spread, 190lbs. thanks for your help

thats the area, seeing if anybody can help me out with conditions, areas, any sights?

Muleemojo,
Where did u see the grizz last year? I hunt that area when we dont get drawn in other areas, last year we were there in late November on the North Fork hunting Elk. But 2 years ago we had a grizz in our camp. Where did you see him? What did he do did he bluff you? When are you heading to Cody to go and hunt, I think we are heading that way around the 1st of November. Good Luck

we were back of te ranch, walking the fence line, we spotted him at daybreak out in the field to the left. we waited, and he went up one of the draws. we thought he went up for the day. we walked up toward the top, hit a game trail and took it about 2 miles, then walked down to the fence, returning about 2pm. as walking up and down the little draws - wind to our back - we were at the bottom and he stood up at the top 30 yards ahead of us. my buddy and i spread about about 5 feet, waited, backed up about 10 steps, and repeated. he was sniffing the whole time. being from WI. he must not have liked the cheese smell, and retreated back to the fields. what a relief. we will be in the area 10/25, staying at the wigwam in cody

Wow,
so you guys make the drive out there every morning? Hopefully the weather comes in a little bit for us in the high country. That area is very dependent on the weather. How long have you been hunting there? We have been going there for about 8 years on and off. Nice country and good times that is for sure. How about them PACKERS a lot better then those Damn Seahawks!!

HOME TOWN!! your guys better be ready from more griz and more wolf encounters this year! things have not improved at all! If anything, and from the sounds of it, things are worst! my three friends, that guide elk and deer hunts in the fall, have all had lots of problems with griz so far this year. in camp, on the trials, charging them, on killed animals before the hunter can claim it!, griz following blood trails, and griz following gun shots! The shot of a rifle means two things to griz--dead animal or gut bile! not to scare you, but be prepaired, be ready, and have a plan of attack ready before it actually happens. If I had to guess, you probably were hunting out of the bobcat trail head--which is a gold mine for griz, due to the ranches near by and the dead animal pits these ranches create! I have filmed, seen, and encountered over a dozen griz in this drainage over the course of one season! Let me know where you are head, and I can give you more details! hope this helps

we usually hunt bobcat, "ranger station", back of te ranch. the family has hunted there for the last 15 years, with decent success every year. we have the bear spray and some bigger guns this year, we will see what happens

ddroppings,
Yea i think that is where he is talking about. Are you from Cody? If so how has the weather been up in the mountains any snow? Cold weather?Any options out there to pay a land owner fee to gain access to private land out the South Fork? Are the wolves getting pretty bad as well? Thats a shame if they are something needs to be done about that!!!!:) Thanks for the input and good luck to you out there!!

I'm not sure why "deerdroppings" is trying to scare you - just be alert for the larger predators. Hunt with a partner and try to avoid killing a deer at dark if you are not packing it out immediately. Enjoy Wyoming and your time spent hunting in the Cody area. Your 5x4 sounds like a nice deer from 2006. Weather(snow, cold or rain) will help this hunt and force the deer to the hayfields. You will probably see more deer in the headlights on the drive from Cody than while hunting near the Bobcat Trailhead - lots of deer - just a few good bucks.

thanks for the input, last years buck along with 4 others were taken near the "ranger station" field house toward the end of south fork. any new news for that area? if i bring some Point beer - any "special" areas we could look into?

I hunted Pass Ck last year and was amazed at the numbers of deer migrating out when the snow started to pile up. We rode out on 10/25. Didn't hardly see any horse back hunters on the way in or way out. However you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting someone in orange as we got closer to the trail head. Get about a 1 1/2 miles from the trail head and you won't see much for hunters. Maybe not a surprise, but we started cutting lot's of grizz tracks the closer we got to the trail head. You want a chance at a good muley, rent a horse and ride in 5 - 7 miles. You won't see a soul and there were deer scattered in a lot of the openings starting below the snow line...

the horse is an option for next year. have to look into the rental. we didnt see many hunters anywhere last year, we always go last week of october. we should be in cody around 7pm 10/25

If you would read my post, I was not trying to scare him, I might have even mentioned it in my post!! anyway, I strongly believe that if you're going to hunt wyoming griz country, a person should be informed about the REALITY! If a person is made aware of the current situation, then they can better prepare for the hunt and in return, have a more enjoyable hunt! I did not strectch the truth, I simply relayed the truth---
