Book Cliffs Deer Hunt

Hunted the opener with some friends. Seen alot of smaller bucks nothing worth shooting, but did here that my wifes cousin shot a 30" main frame with a 2" kicker. I think he was a 9x11 and heavey. Have not seen the pictures or the buck yet.

My brother and I both shot deer. We missed a 26"+ wide and tall 3x3 and saw a 30"+ the day before the opener. I ended up shooting a 4x4 about 21" wide. My brother shot a smaller 3x3 about 16" wide. We had a lot of fun and look forward to hunting out there again in the future. I'll post some pics a little later.

tgmulie, that didn't happen to be a big 3x3 with a kicker on each side would it?

I went down with a friend who shot a 24" 3x3. A lot of smaller 4x4s It was a lot of fun...would love to see the pictures thanks for responding......

Here are a couple of pics of the deer my brother and I shot.

Lots of 26 and 28 inch 4 points being taken. People are seeing tons of deer and passing up on alot of 3 points, some pretty good size, and smaller 4 points. My cousin has a tag and she's still got 6 days left to hunt. She's being very picky but has her eye one a certain one. We'll see what she comes home with.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-23-07 AT 09:10PM (MST)[p]I just walked in the door from out to the Bookcliff's. My cousin's father-in-law has the tag and is still out there. I had to come back to go to work! I was pretty disappointed in the quality of bucks we saw. Lots of small three and fours, the majority in the 18-20" range with crab claws and willowy horns. Only saw one buck that was worthy of hanging a tag on, but he was up and gone before we could get the tag holder on him. He was maybe 26" wide, but was real heavy with deep tines and good eye-guards. They're staying until they either kill a good one or the hunts over, whichever comes first, so I'm hoping they can luck into a good one. The hunter is 77-years-old and this may very well be his last "good" hunt.

I did see a real cool buck out there. He was a spike, maybe 16" tall on both sides, but was still in velvet and had all kinds of trash down around his bases. I'm talking golf ball and softball size growths. I tried to get a picture, but couldn't get close enough before it got dark. Also saw buffalo, which I had heard were out there, but have never seen them before in all the times I've been out.

Sorry gdog---just reports from those on the front lines. No pics. I guess I can try to get pics of a couple of local guys bucks. They're in that 26-28 inch range.

Crab claws and willowy antlers? Yep...sounds like typical Book Cliffs bucks. Especially the crab claws on one side.

I think my brother saw that deer in the velvet as well. He got some good pics of it. I'll post them when I get my hands on them. My cousin and his group were out there as well and had 4 tags to fill. They shot a nice 23" 3x4, a 22" 6x7 and I think a couple of other 4 points. They also saw a couple 29"ers taken as well. There are some really nice deer out there.

I think my brother saw the same deer in velvet. He got some good footage of him. I'll post some pics when I get my hands on them. My cousin and his group had 4 tags and filled them with some nice buck skins. One was 23" 3x4 that was 23" tall as well and another was a 22" 6x7.

Here's a pic of one that was found prior to the season...never caught up with him. I think drymountain has video of this same deer...

my dad uncle and bro in law had the tags. all 4 points with good eye guards and awesome mass. they were 24 25 1/4 and 28 3/4

I encountered two a holes chasing deer on their four wheelers. I tried to chase them down, but they wouldn't get off them. I sure wished Bessy was there. Russ

I think I saw the same jackasses last year. Driving up every ridge on their ATV's and making their own roads everywhere. That stuff pisses me off!!

Too bad you couldn't have turned the tables and chased those a**holes with your truck!............ I would pay to see that!

Gdog, That is a cool buck, I saw him in the back of a truck on Sunday. He had 6" bases and really good mass throughout.

Hey guys and gals...just got back from my solo rifle hunt on horseback...what a blast! As soon as I figure out how to post these pics I'll post 'em and tell you all a story.....

"How is it that every huge buck and bull has hours of video and hundreds of pics taken of it, but an idiot breaking the law never does"?-

Wondered if anyone out there could give me some help. My daughter in law drew for the Books but got a late start. She has to be careful because she has had a difficult pregnancy. Any advice as to where she might be able to find a good buck- 24"- 4x4 ? Thanks

Is this the spike with the trash you saw?

Pretty cool. Do bucks with velvet that late in the season have their undercarriage?

Pick a road out there...any road. Seriously. Head out south of Vernal or South of Ouray. The deer are everywhere out there. The road is horribly rough though and it takes a couple of hours once you turn off Highway 40. Can she handle a really rough road?

Good Luck to her on the hunt and in the pregnancy.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-25-07 AT 04:51PM (MST)[p]FWIW, they were grading the worst of the roads (the first 5-10 miles of dirt after leaving pavement out of Ouray) when I came out Tuesday and they really weren't too bad...

I'm guessing that's him, don't imagine there's too many like that out there. If he's a true cactus buck, he's probably missing his landing gear and will never shed his antlers...

I just got back tonight seen alot of bucks in the low 20's to mid 20's but nothing worth shooting in sweetwater

gdog.

Just got back home from the bookcliff. Man this is a very different hunt from my area. After six days of hard hunting didn't find a shooter. The first two days deer were hard to locate because of the weather. See some great 350+ B/C class Bulls that was about it. BULLS, More Bulls.

The biggest thing that I was not happy about was use of four-wheeler traveling cross country. Walked to several great scoping points just to find a four-wheeler driving in area where to were no roads. The state needs to enforce the use of four-wheelers in road less areas.

gdog, thanks for helping me out!

ZD...sorry to hear you didn't run into a shooter. Did you see many deer? Anything close to getting your trigger finger itchy?

I swear I saw the same 16 in spike mentioned earlier while down w a friend bow hunting. I thought maybe a spike elk had lent its horns outfor a couple days

gdog:

I seen alot of doe's and spike's / fork horn's and some very small 3x3 / 4x4. Didn't see very many deer atop cottonwood or west water area. Found most of movement on the lower level area's.

Didn't even get close to getting a itchy trigger finger. Never found any bucks over 25". Never got a chance to see any heavy horn bucks too. Alot of thin horn animals. Again, had fun running around in new country. Harvesting a animal would have been a plus but ol well. Had a great time in Utah.

gdog,
how do i get in touch with drymountain? i'd like to see the video, if it's of this same buck.
