I am in my second year oh the DH program. I killed a deer last year and am still trying to kill one with a bow this year. If I do end up getting a deer this year I know I will not get a tag next year. But will I be able to apply for limited entry hunts or can I only apply for a bonus point?

Thanks in advance, Byron

I think you can apply for anything LE other than deer. Dont DH have there own seperate draw for LE tags??

LAST EDITED ON Oct-28-07 AT 11:00AM (MST)[p]Nochawk is correct. You can apply for any limited entry hunt other than deer. Having taken two deer already (assuming you are successful with archery) you will have filled you limit of 2 deer in 3 years and won't receive a tag and will not be allowed to apply for L.E. deer. Start applying for L.E. elk and build points. Hopefully you are young enough to draw this "once in a lifetime" tag, if you have not already done so. Good luck

would I be able to apply for just a bonus point for deer? I have 5 points now and would hate to lose a year.

I think you can apply for a bonus point for LE deer, but you CANNOT apply for a general deer or a PP for deer

If you check out the proc, I'm pretty sure you cannot apply for a LE tag, or a bonus point for deer if you have filled your 2 out of 3. My dad was unable to do so this year, after shooting two deer the previous two years.

Here is an e-mail that I sent/received from the DWR a couple years ago. If it came right down to it I'd probably dig a little deeper and make absolutely sure that this is the case but like I said, here is the actual e-mail statement that was sent to me from teh DWR. I kept it just in case I ever need it.

Question:"If I'm enrolled in the dedicated hunter program and draw a limited entry buck deer tag does that count as one of our 2 tags for the 3 year program?"

Answer:"IF YOU GET A LIMITED ENTRY OR CWMU PERMIT THROUGH THE BIG GAME DRAWING, IT COUNTS AS A "NON PROGRAM" HARVEST AND DOES NOT GO TOWARD YOUR 2 DEER IN 3 YEARS. SO YOU COULD ACTUALLY GET 3 DEER IN 3 YEARS, IF TWO WERE PROGRAM HARVESTS AND ONE WAS A NON-PROGRAM HARVEST."

Question:"If I were to take 2 deer in the first 2 years of my dedicated hunter program would I still be eligible to apply for the buck deer sportsman's tag? How about purchasing a landowner tag while in the same situation?"

Answer:"YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR OR OBTAIN GENERAL SEASON TAGS, INCLUDING LANDOWNER GENERAL SEASON TAGS. YOU CAN HOWEVER, OBTAIN PREMIUM TAGS, INCLUDING LIMITED ENTRY, CWMU, AND LANDOWNER ASSOCIATION TAGS THROUGH THE BIG GAME DRAWING."

Pretty interresting huh...
