First Time Elk

As things always seem to go on opening day. We had been watching a 340 bull for three weeks and knew where he was going to be on the opener. So we headed out. Saw some cows with a small bull but not the one we were looking for. Then about 3 hours in we located him. He began to bugle in the pines where we had seen him. So we headed in to chase the bugle. We found their trail and began to follow. When we were about 200 yards from where they had bedded we heard a bang. We continued to follow and came upon a group that had downed our bull. We chatted with them then continued on in our hunt a little discouraged but glad someone else was able to have success.
That night we located some other bulls but could not see them due to the rain storm that rolled in. Monday morning we headed back to our area. Right away they were vocal. We headed to our spot and had 6 different bulls going crazy around us. One was close but we just could not get him to close the distance. The morning went on and we headed out to get lunch. We returned to the area hoping they would become vocal and one would move into a clearing. They started to get vocal when a motorcycle out of nowhere began riding up and down the canyon. All wend quiet for the rest of the night.
We decided to head back hoping to bump something in the trees on the way back. As I stood up just off the edge of the hill it sounded like a stampede. There are cattle in the area so we did not know what it was. Anticipating what it would be I loaded a shell into the chamber. Just then to cows drop out in a clearing. I cow called to slow them down. Then 2 more appeared with a small 4 point bull. Then out of the blue 50 feet of the edge of the hill came a tremendous bugle. That bull then made his way down into the clearing moving through the trees. I place the scope on him to see what it would be. My father-in-law said it is a mature bull. I then saw only the rocking horse or whales tail. The bull stopped, head behind trees leaving an clear shot to the vitals. Shots were placed and the bull was down.
But I had no idea how big it was. Making my way down I came upon this amazing bull which I could not be more happier with. Wonderful experience! First Elk that I have ever taken and first time elk hunting for my father-in-law.

Congrats on a real nice 1st bull. Maybe your father-in-law can be the hunter next time. Sounds like you guys had a fun hunt.
