European Mount

I'm interested in doing a European mount of my CO deer. How do I get the brains out without messing up the skull? Thanks Ray

Boil it or beetles. You could also stick the skull in a bucket of water for a few months and let the water do the work. That stinks pretty badly though. Good luck.

There was another thread about this somewhere....I think some guys boiled and then drilled a small hole in the bottom of the skull and used a piece of welding rod or something like it to scramble the brains.

I personally cut off the back of the skull "slightly" to allow a larger opening into the brain area, but not big enough to be seen when hanging on the wall. Then buy one of those dental picks that they use to scrape your teeth to pull out everything. another point like previously stated is to boil it and use 1 cup of baking soda per gallon of water, helps get loosen everything off the skull. Once it's completly clean boil in 30% hydrogen peroxide/70% water, this helps it turn white.

Mntman.

Boil, carefull not to go too long.

No drillin necessary, there is a natural hole for the spinal cord that is big enough.

Pressure washer!

I just did my Whitetail last weekend. I boiled it over a Deep Fryer burner (for turkeys) in a large metal pot (kind of like a feed bucket). I just bought Borax from the store (any grocery store will have it), $5.00 maybe, and added a few cups. I taped the antlers with plastic right at the base, but water will still seep in so you want to try and keep your water level just at the top of the skull and not much higher. You'll still get some water right at the bases but with them taped, they lost maybe 5% of their color, not enough you can even tell. I would boil for 15-20 minutes, pull out and remove what I could and reapply. I continued this for a few hours. The Borax eats away at the flesh and the brains for the most part "poured" out. Near the end, there were parts of cartlidge in the cranial cavity. I just used a metal coat hanger, made a little hook on the end, and inserted through the spinal column. Would scrape what I could, and throw in back in. As it boiled, it would losen up the cartlidge to the point where it was finally spotless. It was actually a lot easier than I thought it was. As of now, there is no smell, no flesh anywhere, and looks great! I didn't use the peroxide when done, didn't think I needed to. It was pretty white and I think it is a bit more natural that way. Here are some pics!

Just stick a garden hose in the large hole in the brain cavity and hold it there tightly. Then have your buddy crank the hose up quick and walla! The brain will be out of his skull and all over your freaking pant leg! You won't have to dig nothing out and your buddy will enjoy it for sure! :)

It really does work great and saves a lot of time especially if the kill is fairly fresh. Just be sure to keep your mouth/eyes closed when your buddy turns on the hose! :)

As has been stated, you don't need to cut anything open to get the brain out. I prefer to just cover the antlers with black garbage bags and tape them up really well, and bury the skull in a safe place in the backyard. Depending on the temps you might only need a week or you might need 2 months. Then it is a really easy boil with borax and dawn soap(helps with the grease factor) 20-30 mins and scrub with a stiff plastic or steel brush to get the dirt and excess tissue off. The brain will be well and rotted away by then too.

If you want to go fresh, the brain is mostly fat, so it just melts out leaving a sack of sorts that is small and shriveled that you can jimmy out with a coat hanger and hose aproach.

In my opinion letting the skull rot a while is the easiest, especially in regards to cleaning out the nasal cavity. Having done 5 deer, 2 javelina, a coyote, and a wolf, I have sort of figured out a streamlined process I think.
