General Rifle Bulls

Is anyone else besides me surprised on the lack of General Rifle opening weekend posts or did the storms throw everyones hunt for a loop like mine? I had scouted a good sized bull along with a 5 other "alternatives" all summer long up until about a week before the hunt. Opening morning brought a lot of hiking, a lot of snow surprisingly not a lot of orange and even fewer shots heard fired, compared to last year. A week before the hunt I went out and saw 21 bulls and 37 cows, this weekend I saw 6 cows, a calf and a spike. And a smaller 6x6 70 yards off the highway while I was driving home that I'm sure some "winner" pulled over and shot him, for which I could only hope they got busted!

Why would you hope this "winner" would get busted?

If the Mountain Range I Hunted Opening Morning made any Reports it'd be nothing but Buzzing Wheelers/Quads/Rhino's & Rangers!

Not one Shot Fired on the whole Range I was on Opening Morning!

The First Time in History for No Shots Fired to my Knowledge!

Not even ant BS Shots,I was thinking WTH,Chicken season opens at 9:00 AM Opening morning!:D

Fresh Snow!

Cold & Clear!

Perfect Right?

The Biggest Flock of Road Hunters/Wheelers I've ever seen!

Used to be a Place where somebody somewhere in the area would end up taking a few Bulls!

One more place FUBR due to illegal Wheeler Trails Blazed in to every Nook & Cranny & totally pushed out before General Elk season showed up!

I Hiked in from the Lower Bottom, when I started seeing Herds of people headed my way I looped back & out!

Way more people than Elk,GUARAN-DAMN-TEED!

Then to let Hunters Slap them Damn Cow Tags on top of a Bull Tag for a minimal Fee,that ain't gonna Help Our South Slope Herd that was just starting to Rebound!

I used to know of places worth Hiking in to for Elk & Deer!
Thanks to Illegal Bastards & the USFS not enforcing Rules you can Zing in to them Places on Wheelers now & not see a Damn thing!
But by GAWD it don't take long for them U-Tards to get there with all the Unethical BS and the New Technology!

Well went pretty good for us so far. Saw way more bulls this year then last. My father was able to take a 4 point opening morning.

Everybody in camp has been at least seeing elk. One guy saw 9 bulls and only had a quick shot at one in the trees.

I had to come back to work for a few days and heading back up Thursday after work. I got a text yesterday and my Grandpa smoked the biggest bull I have ever seen dead or alive up there. Awesome for him. 75 years old and still hiking around the Uintas out hunting all us young bucks.

Im guessing because it illegal to shoot from a highway!

Exactly!

Overall I heard 3 shots all of Saturday, and really wouldn't of been surprised if they were just shooting for the hell of it.

The biggest point of this thread is just saying it was weird that I saw fewer hunters then years past (there were still quite a few)does the snow and in ability to just drive to where you wanted really turn people away that bad? And I was really surprised at the lack of post here in the forum.
I knew the storms would throw a wrench on my plans, and I totally agree why are cow tags being issued for a rifle hunt in an area(I hunted the Uintas as well)that's elk heard is obviously struggling, sometimes I just don't understand how the heards are managed other then they are managed for big $$$$, at least that's how it seems to me!

jarheadhunter, that bull of your grandpa's is dang impressive for a general tag.

My 2 neighbors rolled in last night, they both got 5x5s on Monday.

Talked to a group of 3 hunters (dads of kids on my son's baseball team). They hunted Chalk Creek area for spikes and saw nothing but big bulls. Isn't that the way it goes? On my LE hunt this year I saw 32 spikes in 7 days of hunting.

Yeah sounds typical you see everything, but what you have a tag for. The Uintas hunt is one of the toughest hunts anywhere I think. You have to be really lucky to even see any elk period. It's all about being in the right place at the right time. They move around a lot and have a lot of area to go to.

was a weird year for us. didn't even see a cow. witch we usually have pretty good success in our area. the fact that a big bruiser of a black bear was learking around didn't help. but oh well if I hunted the uintas every year just to kill an animal I would be a damn fool. it was a great hunt I seen probably the biggest shiras moose I have ever seen in my life. and the kids had an absolute blast.

>I did see 2 nice bulls
>that where shot in the
>Christmas meadows area though

thats roughly the area I was at, I was up higher, to high I think?

Four bulls taken within 500 yards of me. Wrong place at the right time. So close. On the eastern end of the Uintahs, the snow pushed the elk down low. 20 inches of snow will do that. Spent some time up high on Tuesday and saw only three sets of tracks.

General Bull Elk hunting is more about hunting the "human traffic" than it is hunting elk. It's harder, you have to not only hunt the elk but then throw in the giant swarm of UT-Hunters hitting the mountain. I got lucky in 2012 and 2013 and wish all hunters luck. Plenty of big bulls up there sneaking around. Remember the basics: food, water, bedding, and pressure. Good luck to the OTC hunters

The last two years have been the best as far as finding bulls in a long time where I hunt.

Traditional >>>------->

we did pretty good 2 out of 3 tags filled on opening day. saturday was the best day. but we did see bulls and elk everyday we hunted. i killed a 4 point and my bro in law killed a 6x6 nothing huge but not bad for general bull.

"Shoot Straight"

I saw 3 kids ages 21-28 that were hunting up east canyon and they killed a decent 5x5 Monday afternoon... later come to find out those idiots killed the bull on the right side of the trail (private property). They kinda gave me the impression that they didn't know what they were really doing... IDIOTS! Wish I knew their names to turn them in...

My brother shot a small 5x5 on the opener. 2-3" of snow. Saw tons of tracks but not a lot of elk. Tons of hunters. Southslope Yellowstone area.

It was private for sure. We've seen that bull quite a few times going up there and he's been bugling a lot but we haven't been able to hunt him cuz he's always been about 200 yards off the trail in private property so we left him alone. Then those kids tell us they found him bugling and they shot him. We saw the carcass laying on the hill side right about where we've seen the bull a couple times...

I saw several nice bulls in the back of trucks last weekend. I think a lot of good bulls came off of Utahs two new general units.
