Hello,
Been reading this forum for some time and dreaming of a big buck. Well today, it happened to me on my normal Texas panhandle hunting spot. Been hunting there 15 years and never saw a buck like this. It was a 3 hour stalk and another 1.5 hour wait on my knees at 27 yards for him to stand. He has 15 points and grosses 224 1/8. Only 26" outside spread and 19 4/8" inside but the long points made up for that. Never thought I would have the pleasure of sharing a big buck with you guys. Thanks for keeping my dream alive.

Great buck! I wouldn't worry about the spread, its way overrated. Most of the good looking deer are under the golden 30." I have seen many bucks under thirty, that given the choice I would shoot before killing some of the wider bucks. Yours is one of them. Great deer, congrats!

Congrats on a great buck!! To hell with the spread, that's just air. Your bucks got great mass and length!!!

"Good mass & long browtines"

A picture like that deserves to have the words "Muley Crazy" or "Trophy Hunter" above the hunter and the buck!!

Excellent buck!

Great job! Spot and stalk in Texas no less! Does my heart good! great job - who cares about the spread when you have mass, tines and great length! That is a good buck, I don't care what unit you are hunting anywhere in the world! Great job. Get that sucker measured and scored oficially - it looks for sure to be a Pope and Young book buck! Congrats!

Awesome BUCK! It's incredible to see a muley with that much mass in the Texas Panhandle. Was he living anywhere near a grain field?

LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-07 AT 10:41AM (MST)[p]The 26,000 acre ranch/farm we hunt is really diverse. Dry creek beds, sand hills and the flats are irrigated farm land. It has corn, milo, sunflowers, wheat and one field of peas. The owners are very good friends and I'm lucky they let my family hunt. They only hunt birds themselves and allowed me to start deer hunting 15 years ago to help control the poaching. They refuse to lease to anyone and got tired of the phone calls and trespassing. Made me their land owner agent and directed all hunting calls to me. In return, my instructions from the family was to tell everyone no and prosecute anyone caught. Know how lucky we are to have a place like this to hunt on. I'm just an average guy that fell in to a good deal.

We had above normal rainfall and cooler temperatures this spring and summer. Expected the bucks to be above average. Of course, didn't expect anything like this. Our normal mature bucks will gross score between 160-175. We take only mature deer. The past five years I've let the mature 10's walk and have taken mature management bucks to help the gene pool. My son and son in-law are allowed to hunt with me and asked them to do the same the past 3 years. Saw a typical two weeks ago that should score around 185 (guessing). Maybe this management practice is going to pay off.

Thank you for all the nice comments.

Amazing buck. Your story on managment practices is great. Keep up the good work.

That is one beatiful buck xitnet! Long tines- incredible mass. Dream buck. How did you keep his ears pinned for the photo?

Who cares about width, I would much rather take a buck with tine length and mass like yours any day... what a stud buck! congrats

WOW! What a pig!!

Now that you know how to post pictures, do you have any others of this buck you could share with us.

About taking pictures. May sound like a lot of trouble but this is what we do if it's a morning kill.

1. After kill, clean all blood up with dry paper towels and then a damp cloth. Straighten the mouth, nose and face in to natural position.
2. Straighten the front legs and lay ears back.
3. Remove hind quarters
4. Wait 3 or 4 hours and let the deer stiffen up and the moisture to dry from cleaning.
5. Brush the deer before pictures to remove any evidence of dried blood and to lay the hair down.
6. Bend the front legs at the knees. The deer will be stiff enough that this will stand him up for photo?s. Removing hind quarters allow the deer to set up better. Also gives you time to process the hind quarters while waiting.

That second photo really shows off the care you took to take some quality field photos. Post some photos of the buck when he comes back from the taxidermist. Awesome buck.

Congratulations. That's a great deer! Ain't it cool, when you work hard and "the plan comes together". Good for you!

Just found out from an outdoor writer friend that this buck will be the new Texas non-typical archery buck. The current record is around 185. Another friend that does a lot of scoring measured it Boone and Crockett for me. After deductions, he netted it at 218 4/8? non typical. Sorry for all the post, but I'm really excited.

LOL You post away, Jim! We love seeing him and we're pretty excited for you. That buck is just awesome. And I am way impressed w/your photography of it.

Post as much as you want man!!!! That is an INCREDIBLE buck!!!

You should be VERY proud of that buck. I would rather take that buck that this years Utah Sportsmans Tag Buck! But that is just me!

Holy crap. I have to keep going back to really believe that this buck was taken in Texas and with a BOW! That thing is a true PIG!!!

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, just can't help it. :) Thanks for understanding.

This picture shows the neat G-3 on his right horn. It's like a stags crown point.

Truly a buck of a lifetime.....congratulations on one of the toughest critters out there......a big ol' non-typical mule deer.

Jim, that is an awesome buck and some great instructions for getting good photos.
Thanks for sharing on here.
Just curious, what taxidermist do you use?

I am in Amarillo and after being here 2 years have not found a place to hunt yet, there are so many situations like you have, where no one else is alowed to hunt that the panhandle is a bad place to be if you don't own your own land!
Anyone with info for hunting the panhandle of Texas can pm me, I need a place to hunt.(Especially after seeing this!)

Monster congrats on your bow kill. The buck is outstanding. But, it's even more outstanding to put a stalk on a buck like that and kill him with a bow. That's as outstanding as his awesome rack. Very impressive on both counts. My hat is off to you.
