LAST EDITED ON Oct-18-13 AT 10:26AM (MST)[p]I just responded to the other thread about elk on the WF... It got me thinking about another question.

How late into the season have you seen rutting activities on the wasatch extended? I have heard the cows go through two to three estrus cycles? Perhaps I can still find a pocket of rutting elk?

I am curious how most wasatch extended hunters hunt elk post rut? my post rut elk experience is limited but I have hunted them a few times post rut. It seems the big bulls isolate themselves and try and recover from the rut in fertile areas? Hunting them post rut is more like spot and stalk mule deer hunting.

Do all of you find this to be the case? What are your post rut strategies?

I find myself getting out in the WF by myself a lot recently...

If anyone is interested in getting out shoot me a PM. I am always happy to get out and share with and learn from other archers.

Ya from my experience, when the cows that didn't get bred up go back into heat that is the smaller bulls, i.e. spikes and rag horns time to shine.

That's their time to harass the chit out of the cows if you ask me. If you know where to look, I'm sure you'll find the big daddys doing the business end of the deal during the second estrus as well. There's a lot of private land around the front extended and if you know the right places to glass from you can get to see some pretty interesting shows :)

Cheers,
Pete

1st week of November 400 yes off the toad missed a good bull due to a rusted release. 4 more bulls were screaming and about 80 cows just one of those lucky days I was going to kill a deer but switched it to an Elk hunt instead. But it's not something I've seen every year this was in 2010
