Me and my dad were hunting this year in the northeastern region close to are cabin. both me and my hunted hard every day for the whole week while we were up there hoping to see a big deer like the one we got the year before, and all we seen from opening morning to thursday night was just two points and spike nothing big enough for us to squeeze the trigger. every day of the week my dad and i would park and walkin on old roads that have been blocked off by the forest service so that it helps with vegetation and watershed, we also love it cause its nice walking on those old roads. we walk on the roads quit aways trying to get away from people , trucks and four wheelers. after walking in the same road for six days straight it was some what getting discouraging not seeing the big buck yet and just a lot of does and little deer. so we decided we were going to walk in again the same place just not as far as we always do, so we walked about 2 miles to a clearing where we decided we were going to rest a eat are lunch just then the canyon came alive with about 50 head going threw clearing and finally the big 4 point that we have been waiting for was finally in are sights. we sat and watched him for about 10 minutes trying to see if we would come closer finally he did he came within 300 yards of us thats when we shot and we hit it on the first shot and i saw him go down and he got up and started walking down the canyon when we shot again hitting it a second time and it fell again. then it got up again and started walking some more when we shot it again and we watched it fall in the quakes we then walked in to the quakes a couple hundred yards not seeing him with how thich it was when we pushed it into a clearing down the bottom of the canyon a few hundred yards just then when we seen him in the clearing we heard about 10 shots coming down the canyon from 4 hunters that spotted us shooting at him up on top of the mountain (they told us this too) and watched us chase him down the canyon thats when they shot him down. i was the first to the buck thats when i started taking pics of it celebrating when the 4 hunters came down the mountain threatning to fight us if we didnt leave so me and my dad said whatever its not worth die over when they had all the rifles in there hands loaded and the safetys off. we started heading to the truck disapointed when we saw a four wheeler going down the road that we have walked in on to go retrieve there 4 point that they wanted to fight us for. me and my dad both got to the truck exhausted when we heard the four wheeler coming back up the road we stopped him and took pics of him and his four wheeler got his license number and we had proof of him going right around the gate and the fence that was blocked off. the next morining my dad and i headed back to are same spot but not seeing much we headed back to the truck and made are way back up the mountain so we pulled out on a point and started to class when we saw another guy from the same group of hunters up on top of a mountain hauling a two by three. about 5 minutes later the man dropped the deer leaving it there to bake in the sun when he finally got back to are side of the mountain we walked over and asked him if he was going to back to get his deer he told me yes. later that night we spent about 2 hours putting as much rocks and old timber on the road as we could when the next morning we watched the same guys drive there two four wheelers around another forest service gate and fence that was blocking of another old. that just goes to prove that it don't matter what you do or what the state does to try to protect wild life and there vegetation you will always get a group of people that will find there way ruin it for every one else. the same group of people had 12 people in it and out of 12 people 8 of them got deer all little two points and spikes besides the big deer the stole from us.

I hate hearing stories like that. And it doesn't surprise me that there were 12 of them.. for some reason a$$holes tend to flock together. I agree with bess.. the FS isn't going to do squat. As far as them stealing your buck.. Well I guess it depends on the circumstances but I don't play like that.. matter of fact I don't play at all when to comes people thinking they can take whatever they want.. enough said.
Sorry to hear those guy's ruined your hunt.

Jim

Bessy I"ll ask you again (one year later) How do you give a tuneup when they wont get there azz off the wheeler???

For the first time ever, I agree with Robert. Figure out who these horse's asses are and let's see if we can figure out how to correct their behavior.

By the way, nice post D13.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-01-07 AT 11:13AM (MST)[p]I'm having a hard time deciphering who the unethical ones are....the clowns that can't shoot or the ones that put the damn thing out if it's misery? My guess is, if there's any truth to this story at all, which I highly doubt, the deer was probably gutshot at least once, so there wouldn't be any arguement from me on who it belonged to.....

If you honestly have pictures of them in a closed area, post 'em up, right after you contact the Forest Service or BLM! If they refuse to do anything, maybe it's time to get Gephardt. That dude is like a pitbull!...

I was thinking the same thing... but who hasn't made a bad hit on an animal?

This same thing happened to us a few years ago on an elk hunt down in Fish Lake. We came into a meadow and saw 2 spikes and a 2 point. My dad was the only one with a tag so he took aim on one of the spikes. 100 yds away, .30-06 180gr frontal shot. It hit the elk really hard but it didn't go down. After the shot the elk spun around but just stood there only giving us a butt shot so we didn't shoot and waited for a better shot. The elk only took about 2 or three steps the whole time and you could tell it was hurt pretty bad. We didn't want to move to get a better shot for fear of spooking it so we waited. After about 5 minutes or so of waiting for a better shot. Two hunters that we had passed back on the trail, hearing the shot, came into the meadow and gunned down the 2 point (mind you it was a spike only unit and it was a HUGE 2 point) and the spike we had shot. Then they started shooting at the other spike. They had no idea we were watching the whole thing from the tree line but after our spike went down we immediately walked to it. One of the guys saw us and ran for the spike and put another 3 rounds into the elk and before we could say anything he said "this is my elk cause I knocked it to the ground"... Anyway, long story short.. we left because it wasn't worth arguing over and on the way down ran into some F&G cops on horses and sent them in the direction of the guys becuase of the 2-point they shot.
This happened a few years ago and I still have a sour taste in my mouth about it. I don't understand where ethics and respect goes when some people have a rifle in their hands and an orange vest on. Something needs to be done.

Call the Forest Service and provide them with the pictures of these guy's driving behing the gates. I have talked with the FS before and they have told me if you turn someone in and have pictures to prove it they can issue a ticket the same as if they had caught them. It is worth a try. All I can say about the deer is that is too bad. Hopefully next time you can shoot a tad better and put him down quickly. I hope they are "proud" of their buck!

Sucks to hear how your hunt went but honestly, next year, leave the .22 LR at home and shoot something with a little more punch (i.e. .270, 300 win mag). Distance wasn't a factor, so it was either your choice of weapon or shot placement. Dump it where it stands and there won't be an arguement.

I had a group of 5 guys try to take my first elk (in Oregon). I ALMOST let them do it. Certainly glad I didn't.

I agree with you. I still don't know where you got the term pisscutter for little deer (boy did you catch it), but other than that, I think you and I speak the same language.

You're right about the high country, too.

Grant

All I can say is I know there 4 wheelers, trucks and what ever else I could manage to destroy with out getting caught would not work anymore. Then I would steal the deer back and put a lot of tracks between me and them. Unfortunately this kind of retaliation is the only thing that make people like this understand!!!

If you really do have pictures post them already... Let's see them.. and their quads

I would definatly take the pictures and licence plat # to the fish cops and see what happens.

What really amazes me is some of you guys on this site. The guy come on here and tells a story about how he is doing everything right, following the rules and being a good hunter and some unethical hunters, not following any rules, take his deer and all the sudden he is the bad guy because it took him 3 shots.
If I read the story right he took 3 shots and all three times he hit the animal and it went down. Sounds like pretty good shooting to me at 300 yards. Is there any way that this 4x4 could have been an old tuff buck that just kept getting up?
How knows, but lets jump all over the guy for taking 3 shots and not getting his deer. Could be that he was shooting a 300 or maybe bigger and the deer still got up. I have seen deer get hit by a SEMI on the highway and still get up and run away.
Some of you guys are amazing and can find fault with anything, or possibly you are the other hunters that stole the Buck and are just defending yourselfs.

Sounds like a bad deal to me I guess you stand up for your self or quit bitching.

Is it just me, or does anybody else think those as$holes were bluffing? Seriously there's those kind of people all over the world, you run into them everyday that try to live their lives based off of intimidation... I'd just tell 'em I put three good hits on the deer and he's mine, and just keep gutting/skinning him and loading him on the pack...
