Numbers Deer vs Tags

Does anyone know of any compiled data that shows on a state by state basis, how many deer are estimated to be in the state and then how many total tags are issued per year?

The data is compiled for the Western States and Provinces Deer and Elk Workshop (meeting of state and provincial biologists held every other year), but it's up to the host state to publish proceedings and it has not been done very consistently. There's a link to the 2005 proceedings document (most recent that is published) on the Nevada web site, but it leads to something else. Probably your best bet is to contact a local office or state office to see if someone there attended a recent workshop and ask to take a look or make copies of state reports you are interested in.

Muledeernet.org also has state reports, but I just checked the site and seems like it has been pirated or something because it goes to a commercial site. I contacted the webmaster to check on its status.

idk about Utah but i do know that there are 18,000 general buck deer rifle tags and i know that theres not even that many deer total counting the does. It F'ed up but thats the price hunters have to pay so the fish'n game can get there money.

GO BIG or GET OFF the Mountain!

I'm pretty sure this year in CA there were 24,876,999 tags issued and a healthy buck population of about 18.

Seemed like it anyway...........

NDOW updated the link on their website for the last workshop proceedings. It is http://ndow.org/about/pubs/Deer_Elk_Workshop.pdf
The section you want to look at starts on page 56. The last data available for that compilation was from 2003. Keep in mind that because of differing licensing, data collection, and reporting systems among the states, it is difficult to make exact comparisons across states. But still provides good general comparisons within a state through time and across states.

As an example, in 2003 Utah estimated 268,000 mule deer, 61,599 rifle deer hunters, and a total harvest of 23,675 (all weapons). Compare that to Utah in 1985 when there were 360,000 deer, 235,484 hunters, and harvest was 102,685. Proportionately deer numbers went down 25%, but hunter numbers and harvest both fell 75%. Number of deer/rifle hunter increased from 1.5 to 4.4.

If you copy the numbers into your own spreadsheet and add some calculations like success rates, deer/hunter, etc., you can make a variety of large-scale comparisons and look at trends.
