LAST EDITED ON Nov-05-07 AT 12:33PM (MST)[p]O.K.....since the seasons are alomost over, I would like to hear about how well you think your bullet performed or failed on mule deer. Give us the info and your thoughts:

Gun Caliber
Yardage
Bullet used ( type and grain )
Entrance and/or exit location
Entrance and/or exit hole and size
How many shots?
How far the animal traveled?
Were you satisfied?

I'm leaving for a South Dakota muley hunt Thursday, Will answer the questionnaire next week.. hopefully..

I was very please with the bullets I used this year. I used Remington Bronze Point 150 Grain bullets and had great success with them. Both animlas I took this year were with these bullets. Both animlas were killed with one shot. The deer was at 107 yards facing strait on. There was no visible entry wound and no exit wound, in fact there was no blood until I started caping and cleaning him. He dropped right where he was standing, didn't run at all. The antelope was at about 150 yards running full speed quartering away. I shot him in the back breaking his spine droping him in his tracks also. The entry wound was small, the exit wound was about the size of my fist. neither animal traveld after being shot. To say the least I was pleased with this bullet performance.

30.06
40 yards
Nosler Partition 165 grain
1st shot-front shoulder-through and through on a broadside shot
2nd shot- straight down the middle, entered in chest and lodged on the outside of the right rear leg just inside the skin.
The deer looked like he was getting up when I put the second one in him, first one was fatal...I just need to lay off the trigger!
Bullet mushroomed perfectly on the second shot and was recovered when skinning. I was satisfied with a dead deer after 10 yards.

I use a .300 Wthby with 180 grn. handloaded Accubonds. They are leaving at 3428 fps.

I shot 2 mule deer. One, very large deer, at 575 yards. He dropped in his tracks. I hit him just behind the shoulder about 2/3 the way up the chest. The entry would was small and the exit wound only about 1.5 inches. Perfect performance and perfect results.

The other was at about 225 yards. I shot a little too far forward and really clobbered both front shoulders. I would have expected the offside to be pretty broken up, which it was. I was surprised at how much damage there was to the "entry side"; it wasn't such a big hole, as much as trauma, broken bones and bruising. It would have been great, if he'd been a dangerous cape buffalo and I needed to break the shoulders so he couldn't charge me (he didn't).

He, too, dropped in his tracks. He would qualify as a generic 4x4.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-05-07 AT 07:06PM (MST)[p]i shot this nice 4 point with my 30.06 using hornady 165 grain btsp bullets. The shot was 283 yards through the lungs. I have shot both deer and elk with this bullet and it does an awsome job.

.
the elk was shot with the same bullet at 370 yards, it went about 10 yards.

I was quite surprised with the bullet performance having just changed for target practice.

I was shooting my Remington 700 ADLSynthetic in 300 WinMag with Leupold VXIII with B&C site.

I bought Cabela's bulk ammo in 180 grain.

Testing grouped in 4.5" at a lasered 500 yards from the bipod.

Deer stayed in his bed at 397 lasered yards with a neck shot. Heaviest muley to date for me. 5x5 with extra sticker behind left brow tine.

300WSM. 88 yards. Winchester Supremem Elite 150 Grain XP3. Entrance location: in front of the left shoulder, small entrance. Exit location: Upper right mid/flank-section, HUGE exit (12" x 8") ... there were bits of fur etc. covering a
~10 yard radius in the snow around where the buck dropped from the explosive exit -- never seen that before. Satisfaction? Still uncertain. It was too much gun at that range. I love the accuracy and the speed (3300 FPS), however, the exit wound was far too destructive.

My deer shot with 300win mag hornady interbond 165gr 347yrs on the finder. 1 shot just behind shoulder exited opposite shoulder. Small entrance no damage on meat entrance, destroyed entire exit side shoulder meat with 1.5' exit hole. Deer went 0 feet after shot, dropped like a box of rocks.4x4

Dads deer shot 7mm mag hornady interbond 162gr 324yrds on the finder. 1 shot center shoulder exited opposite shoulder. Small going in 2" going out. Totally destroyed ALL shoulder and alot of neck meat. The deer went straight down.3x3(bigger than the 4x4)

All in all we were happy with the bullet performance with the exception of all the wasted meat. Three inches of shot placement would have made a world of difference. It was a fast clean kill so I will not hesitate to use these rounds again. I recomend these if your main concern is knock down and energy transfer. By far the best knockdown I have ever seen on any deer.

Both deer were mature bucks from SE Idaho.

Gun Caliber: Look at the name

Yardage: 293

Bullet used ( type and grain ): Nosler Ballistic 150 gr. / 58 gr of Hodgen 4831 SC powder.

Entrance and/or exit location: On a quartering away shot, the bullet entered at the first rib taking out two ribs, carried through the lungs and the ticker, and lodged in the opposite shoulder.

Entrance and/or exit hole and size: The entry wound was larger than normal because of the angle and hitting bone.

How many shots?: Just one.

How far the animal traveled?: About 20 yards

Were you satisfied?: Definitely, I have taken 4 deer with these loads and all have been one shot kills from distances of 40 yards to 350. It is by far the most accurate load I have shot out of my gun and with the exception of this buck, all have been complete pass throughs.

I just found four boxes of Winchester supreme 160 grain silver tips in .280 Remington. I used this round for years and never had an animal take a step. I changed to the 140 grain ballistic silver tip and hate them. Now, at least for a while, I will be back to the 160's.

This years buck was at 140 yards between the shoulder blades, through the spine. Dropped straight down. No exit. Very accurate round. Read my story.

Anybody know where I can get some more of these rounds?

Mike Henne

I had bullet failure this year. Didn't get no friggin Elk. Of course I guess it helps if you get to pull the trigger.

110 yards

My spike bull elk was with the same rifle at 350 yards in the spine one shot. He fell back and rolled about 60 yards.

270 win, 200 yds on about a 225 or so 5pt. 130 gr nosler partition. shot was 6 in. behind shoulder with same exit. entry hole small and exit was golf ball size, as may have busted a rib. 1 shot and down. partition load was Jack O'Conner's load, 60 gr 4831 behind 130 grain bullet. have used off and on for many years on mule deer and wt. always performs if i do my part.

Weatherby = make
7mm Rem. = caliber
175 gr. Trophy bonded bear claw (Federal) = bullet
spike bull elk = target
105 estimated/paced = yardage
quartering away = shot type
no visiible entry wound = entry
no exit wound = exit
I think the bullet entered the shoder and clipped the spine ultimately following the spine up the neck and breaking the jaw.
0 = yards traveled after shot (unless you count rolling down the steep hill = 10 yards)

Very satisfied. This is the third elk I have taken with this bullet with similar results. The other two mushroomed perfectly and retained a great portion of their mass.

Deer hunt starts this weekend.

Buddies 194 Buck:

300 Win Mag
100 yards
165 Fusion
Straight on shoulder shot, bullet exploded and did not penetrate into vial area. Buck limped off 30 yards and bedded down. Another shot at 20 yards broadside to finish animal. You could pick out all the bullet pieces out of the shoulder. Total bloodshot on near shoulder.
Not to satisfied with the bullet exploding. Would have never thought that just about any bullet would have not made it into the vitals on a deer when shot in the front shoulder. Never seen this with a core-lock or partition.

Small buck shot this year.
125 yds quartering away.
.30-06
165 grain Hornady SST, handloaded (Max load)

Hit about 8" behind shoulder a little high. Entrance hole was almost two inches because I hit a rib. Took out bottom part of back bone and recovered bullet just under hid next to the opposite shoulder. Buck was DRT. I've never seen anything drop so quickly! It didn't even flinch after the shot. I'm pretty happy with the bullets so far.

I shoot a 300 Weatherby Mag,I use 180 grain Barnes Triple shocks, with 84 grains of Norma MRP powder.Killed a 5X6 bull elk at 492 yrds did not pass through but dropped him 1 shot right behind the shoulder. He went straight down.Am i satisfied? Would shoot nothing else.

I agree that barnes makes a incredible bullet. I shot my elk at 20 yards, it went in , hit his backbone and I found it in his shoulder when I cut him up. Even this close it opened up just like it was supposed to and retained over 90% of its weight. I shot their new MRX ballistic bullet, 300 mag 165 grain.

I use the Hornady hp/xtp pistol bullets in my muzzleloader, I dropped this deer in his tracks with a 300 grain slug, 150 grains of powder, knight disc at 230 yards, one shot.

I shot him quartering away and found the bullet in his front shoulder on the opposite side, it also had mushroomed like it was supposed to.

This is the exit side of a small mule deer I helped a friend shoot a couple weeks ago. He used my rifle and as far as I'm concerned the rifle, load, and bullet performed perfectly!

Christensen Arms .270 Weatherby Mag
248 yards
130 grain Sierra Game King w/ 3,550 FPS muzzle velocity.
Entered through the front shoulder and exited in front opposite shoulder.
See picture for exit hole size.
1 Shot.
Droped like a rock.
Yes, very satisfied. Now I can hopefully shoot a little bigger bodied/antlered buck on the Kaibab west side in a couple weeks!

300winmag
federal premium, 180 grain
1.Mule deer 125yds-severe quartering away, hit just in front of the hindleg and stopped in chest cavity, ran 10 feet.
2.elk 80yd. 1st was quartering away stopped against hide, 300yds. both broadside one stopped against the hide other punched through. Ran 100 yards total after first shot.
3.elk 27yds. blew right through at broadside, 1 1/2"exit hole. Ran 30 feet.

Very satisfied with it! have put down 5 elk and haven't had to use my tracking skills with it yet. All have ran less than 40 yards with the exception of the one that went 100, He only went 20-30 after the 2/3rd hits though.
A little over kill for deer but not enough time to sight it in with 150 grain for deer with only 3 days between seasons.

My elk this year was at about 40 yds (self defence)with my 300 Win. 180 gr Nosler Part. Bullet broke a rib on the way in on a high angle shot and hit the spine breaking the back. Elk crumpled. We found the bullet while skinning. Front core completely gone.

My buddies had great success with the 150 core-locks in Montana out of a 300 win Mag and a 7MM. Great penetration and good sized holes.

Let's hear some more!!!!!

180 grain hand loaded nosler accubond out of my 300 WM has accounted for 3 big ole bucks in the last 2 years. This bullet has preformed flawless for me at distances that we won't mention.

You couldn't pay me to use Winchester silvertips. Rem cor-locks have worked well but have started to use Federals with only 1 deer so far.
