LAST EDITED ON Nov-24-13 AT 09:24AM (MST)[p]LAST EDITED ON Nov-24-13 AT 09:14?AM (MST)

It all started in May when we found out that my Dad had drawn the Manti early after 15 yrs. trying. We were pretty excited. Not long after, we got our results for our home state of Nevada. As I called my dad at work to tell him the results, he asks," I drew an elk tag didn't I?". I told him that he did and I don't know what went through his mind. He drew a good rifle tag with only 4 points. He had a 111-115,221,222 muzzy elk tag here 10 yrs. ago and was unsuccessful. We knew he couldn't turn back the Nevada tag and he decided to keep them both. The Utah tag was in Sept. and Nevada was in Nov. He only had 2 weeks vacation. 1 for each hunt. My dad is 60 yrs. old and has had both hips replaced, back surgery, and 1 knee surgery. Years of construction. So, the Utah hunt. My dad killed a 4 pt. bull off this unit years ago when it wasn't even limited entry. I think back in the 70's. Not knowing this unit well for limited entry, as we hadn't been on the unit for years, we were going back in the area he had hunted many yrs. ago. My brother fortunately was able to scout the unit a week before the hunt. We had a cousins friend helping his buddy on the archery, so my brother headed in they're direction. Well, that's were we ended up going. Totally different than planned all along. Every day we seen bulls in the distance, heard several bulls we couldn't see. We were limited to hiking due to my dads condition, but we were sure having fun. After missing a nice bull with his 30-06 on evening number 3, he decided to try my brothers 300 WSM to get a little more distance. Something he swore he wouldn't do. Late morning number 4 found us in a bowl shooting the WSM. 10 minutes down the road from there, we spotted a nice 6 pt. we decide to go after. We get within 400 yds., but small timber was blocking where him and his cows had bedded. My brother decides to head back out of canyon to the truck to grab his calls. 2-3 minutes of cow calling and a few bugles and the elk did exactly what we needed. As the bull gets nervous and starts gathering cows, they come out in open and my dad shoots. Miss. They start moving low where they are about to escape, when the bull stops from our cow calls behind the cows in a little clearing. After dang near pushing my dad down to where he had that last shot, he shoots again and the bull goes down. Shot was exactly 400 yards. Here is his Manti 6x6.

The last pic is of my dad and brother.
I think he is living through us now, as he wants us to draw that unit so he can go and fish. Lots of small lakes up there. It was some beautiful country for sure. We'll see what I do with 13 points next year.

Now Nevada. After a few deer hunts in October, my cow hunt, and my 14 yr. old nephews Nevada bull tag( my brother said he wants to post it on here, so you will have to wait for his post-under NEVADAGUY). He shot a 7 pt. opening morning. Once again, my brothers shift allowed him 5 days of scouting before my dads hunt. Pure misery trying to work with him sending me all those pics of nice bulls. Night before the opener, my dad and I roll into camp to sit in the trailer and watch videos of all the bulls my brother seen. We knew this was going to be good. Opening morning we got on a heard of around 100 elk. There were 2 six points in here, but the bigger one had like 2 inch fifths. He passed this bull several times that morning. One time we had them in the middle of an old 2 track. That was tough. Day number 2 was not fun. We had to get up at hunting time to drive to Salt Lake for my aunts funeral. It was our 2nd funeral there in 2 1/2 weeks. First one was day before my nephews hunt. Salt Lake and back in a day really sucks. Kinda puts a bad mood in the middle of hunting, but you have to deal with life how it hands you, right. My dad later said that was the reason he didn't shoot that bull on the opener. He was a nice bull. Anyway, day 3 was Friday, my brothers last before he had to go back and work a couple days. My dad missed a really nice bull that morning. I really don't know what happened. My brother was bummed he had to leave. My good friend from Salt Lake showed up that night. Day 4 was pretty unproductive. Day 5 starts out with a flat tire, then we ran into some guys in the draw we wanted to go. I asked them if they wanted us to turn around and they said yes. Knowing how I would feel, we turned and headed out. Heck of a start. We went down to the next access and as we headed in we located a heard. Not wanting to waste any time( my dad was not liking to sit back and look), we got out and did a b-line to intercept them. As we got in there we located a couple cows and a small bull. I seen another bull, but a tree was in the way. As he walked out at 200 yards, I could tell he was a 6 pt., but not sure how big. Before I could get "He's a 6 point out of my mouth", boom. Elk goes down. As we are walking up to finish the bull, I can here this bull In the draw to my left screaming his guts out. I was dying to go look, but couldn't as I needed to stay focused on downed bull. 2 minutes later, I turned around and seen probably 300 head going up across the road. Wish I could have seen what was in there. Anyways, here is my dads Nevada bull. He was very happy and I was happy for him. We was really bummed my brother wasn't there, but I guess this was meant to be. One rag bull and a spike in 40+ yrs. of hunting and he kills 2 six points in one season. I'm glad he kept both his tags. I will never forget 2013. Way to go, Dad.

Last pic is my dad and my buddy. Sorry the quality is not good. It is the only one I have with both of them.

That is a great year of hunting you guys had. Thanks for sharing. No better way to hunt, than with Family.

Well done guys!
Thanks for sharing the great story and pics.
Elk hunting can be tough even when a guy is in great shape. Sounds like your dad's a trooper for hanging in there and getting the job done in 2 States.

Congrats to your dad on the hunts and great bull.

This is the year: OLD GUYS RULE!
