I have drew 3 wasatch late cow tags,I have learned of all the tags the dnr has given out this year. And have decided to take my 12 year old boy on his first elk hunt,But have decided to leave my gun and my older boys gun at home.Has this herd been slaughtered this year?.Im already given up 2 tags and not hunting, but my boys first elk at age 12.Starts this january and need to know if its worth shooting 1 out of 3 elk.Without hurting the herd any worse.
Does anyone know how bad this slaughter was?

There is a lot of talk about the herd not being what it once was but there's still plenty in the area I watch. What area is the tag for? I would be happy to help your boy or just pass on some info.

Well, for the most part,

The guys seeing " tons " of elk in these areas, are the rookie
guy's, that think 10-15 head of elk together are BIG herds !!!!!!!!

And the guys that know what 50-60 head of elk running together
once looked like,,----IN EVERY OTHER CANYON,,,,
Are saying elk numbers are wayyyy down.......

I'm not going to get into with the experts about elk numbers on the wasatch. Take your boys out hunting and make some memories.

Go fill your tags and have fun!
You wanted a tag, they gave you the tag, do your best to fill it.

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

Well we have three tags total,But ive elected to only shoot one.And that's if my 12 year old can shoot one.So i think im doing my part and saving 2 out of three cows.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know everything but your actions smack of something the anti-hunters do. They buy tags, taking them from other sportsmen, and then don't fill them!

Unless you know how many elk are there for yourself, you should just take all the tags, guns and hunt. Chances are you wouldn't fill them all anyway. Elk hunting is never a walk in the park!

Maybe the boys killed all the elk after I was there August-October but I saw plenty of elk (whatever that is). However, not as many as prior to a couple years ago. The antlerless tag are having an effect and there have been too many elk killed in some areas.

Good luck no matter what you decide to do.

Just my opinion but let both boys hunt. Let them draw for first shot, who gets to carry the gun that day, etc. Make it fun for them so they'll get hooked.

3 tags, 3 hunters and 3 guns. Kill em why not, if you don't someone else will. If not those 3 elk will get waxed with the billion cow tags next year.

I like your decision! To take one. It is easy to kill them it takes someone special to let em live.
