Ok troopers, i have a dilemna and am seeking honest advise.

The draws are coming up and i have 11 points for deer in the Henry mountians, undisputedly the best place to kill the buck of a lifetime anywhere in the world.

Here's my dilemna-
I'm getting close enough to drawing this tag now, so i need to take which hunt i put in for very serious.

Do i put in for the rifle, or the muzzloader?

I am going on this hunt NOT for the "hunt" as being my priority, but for the kill to be my #1 goal.
I have guided many a deer hunter for trophy bucks, so i have had many "hunting experiences"....now it's MY turn to kill and i want to do it right.

I know that with a muzzleloader tag, that time of year the bucks will still be high and in the summer patterns for the most part, the archers don't spook them TOO much.
BUT.....i simply don't have all the confidence in the world for a muzzloader to put a tag on the line like this one. But they HAVE been killing some giant bucks down there this way and i seriously need to consider it.

Or....just put in for the rifle and hope i can still find my once in a lifetime buck.

What do ya say??

I would say that you are still a little ways away from a henrys rifle tag. But I could be wrong . as for the Archery or Muzz hunts I would say that both are abouyt the same if your can hunt with both weapons if not I would pick the one you are best with and go for it by the way are you a res or non res that could make a differance in the draw odds...

P.S The Henrys can be one of the Best places but there are others out there that you could kill a 200+" Buck like the Santa Rosa but that is private just like the Alton and other southern Utah units Good luck on the draws I will be putting the wife in for the Henrys but she only has 10 points we are just praying for luck to be on her side...

It's a deal ransom, you can't eat horns anyway!

In 2006 there were 6 people that applied for any weapon with 12 points and all drew.

21 people put in that had 11 points....one drew.
43 people applied that had 10 points, noone drew.

About the same stat's on the muzzy, it took 12 to draw, but with 10 archery points, you were guaranteed a tag.

So all in all, i'm NOT that far from drawing, three years tops.
BUT....i COULD get lucky and get it this year or next....i just want to make sure i put in for the right tag.

Nope, not big enough bessy.

There's really not Bobcat, right now there is noone with "max" points on deer anymore, they have gone through them all.

Now looking at elk...there are hundreds of people that still have the max of 15 points and a gazillion with less than that!!

I'll NEVER see an elk tag in this state unless that I400 goes through.
(ouch, that's gonna leave a mark!! stay calm bessy ;-))

Slamdunk if I were in your position I would lean towards the rifle tag over the muzzy tag. Like you said before this is a hunt of a lifetime and your looking for the kill. Not to say that one can not kill a monster buck with a muzzy, but IMO your chances at taking a monster buck are far better with a rifle than a muzzy. However, there are some draw backs to hunting the rifle hunt, you go after the archers and the muzzleloaders and the deer tend to get moved around a bit. I also think it might take a few years more to draw the tag due to the growing popularity of the unit. If I had been banking points like your and were this close to a Henries tag I say hold out for the rifle tag. Good luck to you in the draw.

HEY slam!!!

SO I GUESS YOU'RE GONNA BE BULL HEADED & TURN MY OFFER DOWN???

THEM "BASIN BUCKS" ARE NICE BUCKS!!!

DID YOU SEE THE 42" HENRY'S BUCK THEY TOOK THIS YEAR???

MAYBE THATS WHAT GOT YOU EXCITED???

pushin30-

Youre thinking just like i am!!

But then look at the hawg on the cover of Muley Crazy right now.
230" buck that was killed down there at 230 yards with a muzzy??

I've shot my Knight at 200 yards before at targets, and i just don't trust myself or the gun at that range.

But with my Mark V Weatherby .300........"tag, your it"!!

Ya cat, i saw him.
I have also seen a few other "secret" bucks guys have taken down there.
That 42" one is definately NOT the best buck taken this year from there....not even close.

Skull Krazy

I'M ABOUT TO START ACTING LIKE wiley & Pro!!!

"THERES A 40" BUCK ON THE HENRY'S & I WANT TO HUNT HIM"!!!

Doug, anyone who thinks the muzz hunt is better then the rifle hunt out there should have their head checked :) Nuff said.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-11-07 AT 08:01PM (MST)[p]I think you will be in the random draw like everyone else for the next few years. There is about 300 people that have as many or more points as you for deer. Assuming most will put in for the Henries, thats a lot of people to go through with so few tags. That being said, I think I would start to get a little excited myself. I've got a long ways to go with my 2 points.

I've got a pic of the sportmans buck and another huge 37" Henries buck in the same pic. Have you seen that one?

Been meaning to tell you all week, Slam...that "Secret" buck? I think it's not as secret as you think. Another dude I talked to out in the Book Cliffs last week described the same pic you described...everything the same.

slamdunk, I already told you my opinion. But, you got to live with the choice, I just get to tag along.:D

PRO

Hey, now all my buddies finally jump in!!
I gotta be quick here, Shark is about too start!!

Ya Jenn, i didn't think that buck could be held secret for TOO long....what a freakin hawg typical!!

Brow, i just heard about Denny's buck today, it also cost him 70K!!!!
But i have been around Denny a LOT hunting deer with him....he's not going to starve paying $70,000 for a deer.
I'm sure he celebrated in camp with $500 bottles of wine in real crystal glasses and tossed around travelers checks like playing cards....been there done that!!

And yes Pro....your invited too :)
But you'd better sharpen your eyes for deer and give all those (in Bessy's words) "big stinky's" a rest!!

11 points did you say?

I hope you get lucky and draw!

Here are the facts 15 tags a year 7 go to top point holders all of those who have 13 are done. There are 23 people left that still have 12 points. There are 52 that have as many as you.
This gives you a total of 75 tags that have as many or more points than you. Divide that by 7 which is the total of tags given out to high point holders and you still could have 10 years to hunt that unit.

But it would be worth the wait!!

Great math buckmaster...now i'll go cut my wrists!!

One question though...out of those 75 point holders, how many are putting in for the "any weapon Henry's"?

My odds are better than 10 years i'm sure.
(or at least i hope!!)

Go smoke pole!! Those deer on the Henry Mtns weren't even the slightest bit scared last week. Most of the deer we saw just sat there and let us film them. You shouldn't have any problem getting an exceptional buck, especially with your experience. It does take the 300 + yard shot out of the picture though so that is the downfall. I can see your dilema though.

It's always an adventure!!!

All of those stats were taken off the division?s page for hunt 003 which is any weapon.

If you think that is bad I still could have up to 11 years for an archery tag. I have 7 points and guys from the any weapon and muzzy keep peeling off which hurts my odds. Two years ago I only had 3 years until I was guaranteed a tag now 11 go figure. At least not very many people can bump you out. Good luck with the tag it is the hardest part of this hunt. Once you get one bring on the big bucks!

Hey Dunky Do...
I'll bring the horses....

By the way,
I live in UT.
There are a lot of UTARDS that live here.
I have also seen quite a few WYOMORONS, NEVADUHNS, COLORADORKS, ID-IOTS and AIRHEADZONANS in my travels.

My uncle had a muzzy tag this year. I was worried that we wouldnt be able to get close to the big buck we spotted. But we ended up running into him at 95 yards. So it just depends on your stalking skills and luck.

Ponies huh ichabod? Hmmmmmmm.

I'm not much of a cowboy, but if that's what it's going to take, i'll join the rodeo and learn to ride!!

I know the Henry's pretty dang good, and i can think of a few places down there that some hay burners would be useful :)

I would go on the muzzy hunt and the rifle hunt next year. I would see what I thought about my chances on each hunt. Once I did it without a tag I would decide what to do the next year. If you have not gone to the unit without a tag I would just put in for points this year and make sure that I knew without a doubt what tag I wanted and where I was going to get a buck. It usually takes 3 years to get the lay of an area and really understand what the bucks will do when pressured. I would want to make sure I had all that in the bag before I drew.

If you had all of this done you would not be asking this question. Good luck in the draw.

Sweet gdog, i could sure use your eye's.

I saw how you pulled a rabbit out of a hat in the Book Cliff's!!
