Looking for a good bull

So, I'm looking for a NICE bull hunt for my husband, somewhere where he'll have a chance at a 350-400+ class bull in Wyoming/Colorado or close. But everywhere I look I see brag pictures of 5x5 bulls and mediocre mule deer. Any suggestions of outfitters? We'd prefer somewhere that uses pack horses but it's not a deal breaker for the right outfitter. Ranches are for cattle so hunting wild is a must.

Hey Jenn!

I'd get ahold of Little Beav at Strawberry Marina & Outfitters!

They GUARANTEE 400"+ Bulls!:D

(((RAZZIN/KIDDIN!)))

Most OutFitters Ain't gonna show you the Cream of the Crop or you'll think You'll be Guaranteed a 400"+ Bull!

You might Check Black Timber Outfitters!

You might check MossBack!

You might check Hi-Top!

And Remember: 350" Bulls are Big Once again!

Even in TARDville!

Good Luck!

A "wild" public land 350-400" bull? Is there such a thing anymore? lol

One thing's for sure, they're not a dime a dozen!

What's your budget, if that's not too bold?

Bess gave you some great choices but in order to get the tag it's gonna hurt a little (in the wallet)!

A bull that big is hard to come by fair chase. If the $$$ are not a big deal check some Reservation hunts. Bobby Hill's ranches in Colo. have some good bulls. Good luck

I want to keep it under 10K but could go more if I have to. I can stay in my home state and get that class of bull 5 minutes from my house but drawing the tag is the hard part.

Doesn't have to be on public land, just fair chase. What's the fun hunting behind a fence?

Not your area BUT sounds like your serious so check out New Mexico, Gila archery or Muzz. Area 15. That's the only place I have seen several 400 bulls on public land in the last 10 years.... Best to use an outfitter that knows the country, terrain and how to trick those bad boys into coming your way.....those bulls didn't get that big by being stupid :) find a guide out of Reserve N.M. Area. Check on a landowner tag they go for at least 10K on the quality Ranches.

Biggest Bulls on the Planet...

You got Yellowstone park. shoot a 400+ bull and pay a 10 grand fine. kidding aside maybe look into a late season hunt to catch a migration.

there are some ranches in NW colorado that would be in that price range and size of bull you are looking for. probably not the 400" side but definitely on the 350" end of the scale.

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

Sounds like scrap metal

Sorry but I drive a 2010 3/4ton dodge 4x4 17" tires, factory exhaust, no lift. Gooseneck ball to pull 24' aluminum stock trailer...it's a gutless wonder and desperately needs chipped, but that's another forum on another site.

You see, you can to in to your account settings and leave a signature that is automatically posted on every post you make. Not everybody has one though, so it is kind of tricky to figure out who's signature is a signature. Take Bessy for instance (elkassassin) half of all his posts are his signature! It's kind of a waste of bandwidth but Founder lets us do it to have some kind of personality around here.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-20-14 AT 10:53AM (MST)[p]Wait did bess let the cat out of the bag on this thread??? If this is really Jenn then she changed her Screen name....

and in response to the original question, the cheapest we could get a tag and hunt in would be flirting with the 15K range, that's assuming that the rifle tags drop back to where they are supposed to be 7-9K range. Thus far this banquet season, its not looking good....

LAST EDITED ON Mar-22-14 AT 04:49PM (MST)[p]Steve Biggerstaff of Biggerstaff Guides out of Glade Park, Colorado (Unit 40) would be my first choice as far as Colorado goes. Wyoming would be my top choice for the kind of hunt you are looking to do. However, acquiring a tag in an area where a bull like that is possible will take a decade or more for a non resident just entering into the preference point game.

You'd be over 10 grand in just acquiring a LO tag to hunt 2,10 or 201 before you even hired an outfitter like Raftopolous or Chris Jurney.

May cost more like 12,000 but you could get a landowner tag in new mexico and a good outfitter.Look at unit 12,15 17.They have rut muzzy hunts or bow and a 350 type bull could happen or bigger.Unit 12 would be a rifle rut hunt.

Not a fan of BiggerStaff. if you are going to pay in CO unit 40 go on outfitts with private land. much better chance at a trophy and nothing shady.

Just how tough is a 350+ these days? On public land. If a hundred serious MM member set out to get one this fall, how many are actually going to be harvested?

It would be an interesting survey.

Yes it would be interesting and disappointing for many.
If you're talking an over-the-counter tag I suspect the odd are about 2% of the hunters would kill a true 350"+ bull. There would be other nice bulls taken but that's about it. Total success would range around 20%.
If all 100 guys had LE or great unit tags then I suspect the number would be closer to 25% for 350" bulls.
Big bulls are just tough to come by unless a guy is in the right spot. Most guys over-score their bulls anyway so maybe any bull would reach 350" with the "right" measurer! LOL

There's my opinion. Take it for what it's worth.
Zeke

I'm not necessarily looking for a public land bull. I have no problem with taking one off private land, but I refuse to shoot one that's behind a fence and can't come and go as it pleases. Also, what do you consider an "average" score for an area? Here it's common to harvest a 300+ class elk, and there are several 350+ taken each year, so maybe I'm not appreciating what is literally just outside my door.
