Best western magazine

They are all pretty good! I am just glad that the SLC airport carries all of them. Every month I buy all of the good hunting mags for my flights that month. SLC is good to carry all of them.

I think they all have their good points, But I am really liking Eastmans and Kings as the front runners. A know the editor of Muley Crazy and I also like that one!

Eastmans. Muley Crazy is good, but it seems like every other deer in there is from the AZ strip or Sonora...it gets old!!!

---------------------------------------
This is my post

I've just pissed in my pants.......and nobody can do anything about it.

Sorry, not trying to leave out Kings hunting.
Thats a good one also, I just don't care for the 4-wheeler section they have.

I like them all. For the most part they've all stepped it up a notch or two the last few years with the quality of editing, photos, etc......

Have to throw the "Huntin Fool" in there too. It cost quite a bit, but if you're into hunting out of state every year, it's worth every penny.

"Eastmans' Journal" has really stepped up the MRS the last few issues. This last issue was really good-I especially liked the deal on Utah's conservation tags:)

"Muley Crazy" usually has some of the best pics because they're so big, and I like pictures!

My bathrooms are all decorated with western hunting mags!

I enjoy reading them all, but i like Muley Crazy the best for big deer....I'm not a big Eastman's fan.

Skull Krazy
"No Bones About It"

All of the above and Western Hunter. Although my favs are HI and Trophy Hunter.

Competition in the Western hunting magazine industry has produced some outstanding publications for all of us. I look back at when I was a kid and all we really had was Outdoor Life, Field and Stream, Sports Afield and most had generic "how-to" about western big game hunting by outdoor writers who specialized in fiction. Made up crap to fill pages.

Now we have some serious eye-candy out there and some extremely talented editors, layout people and graphic design folks. I'd say we are pretty lucky to have what we have now-a-days and there are some real quality publications to subscribe to.

What is really interesting to see is how the magazines impact each other with ideas and content and how they evolve over time. What is less than interesting is to see the same big buck on the cover of 3 or 4 different magazines.

I cant stand how a person has to be wearing Kings camo to be on the cover or practically in the magazine, other than that it is a good magazine.
And because of that TROPHY HUNTER is my pick for the best magazine because of the 'politics', politically correct pictures and favoritism that are not as rampant when compared to HI, MC, and Eastmans (yes that is in order of fluff).
Eastmans would be my next pick.

Wow to me there nothin better than lookin at huge muleys and i dont care where they come from. In fact in the last one that just came out theres only one from the strip and 0 from ole mex. I said more pics less words, goes for playboy too!

For western big game, it would have to be Eastmans and Trophy Hunter in that order. For Mule Deer, in my opinion MC has the market. I'm not a huge fan of Kings anymore. When they first came out, I think they were way better. Now it is nothing but marketing, marketing, marketing. One mag that I'd throw in the mix would be Big Buck. Yea, lots of monster whiteys, but they do showcase numerous Canadian Mule Deer every issue that the majority of the other mags have no idea even exist.
By far my least favorite mag on the rack nowadays is Big Game Adventures. I used to really like the BC/Yukon/NWT articles but the amount of canned hunts they throw in the mag now just makes me wanna puke. For that reason alone, I refuse to buy it anymore.

Ironic that I just finished posting about Big Game Adventures and I jumped to another site and someone posted up this.
"NOTICE TO READERS, SUBSCRIBERS AND ADVERTISERS
OF BIG GAME ADVENTURES MAGAZINE
The Fall 2007 issue is still at the printers in the US. It is partially printed and we hope will be finished shortly so it can be delivered to all newsstands and subscribers worldwide. In the meantime a complete digital online version will soon be available on this site at no cost. It will feature every story, every ad and hotlinks will connect you to every advertiser.
To say this year has been disastrous is an understatement. Nearly every one of the BGA team has been affected somehow in the last 12 months, including:
Our publisher (Keri-Lynn) has severe bi-polar disorder and it continues to affect any work she tries to do with the magazine. Currently she is not active in the magazine at all and is on permanent disability. Keri is my wife and she has her hands full with three children under the age of 7 years old.
Personally I was nearly killed by a bison charge in December when I was filming a segment for our TV show. I immediately promised my wife and family I would give up hunting forever and have done so. I never set foot in the field again since that day and do not plan to ever again. The stress it caused my wife and children is unmistakable and I will not cause any more by hunting again in my lifetime.
Our Director of Operations (Glenn Bowden) has cancer and is not expected to ever return to BGA. Our secretary (Nora) was run over by a car this summer while riding her bicycle and suffered a broken spine and will not return to work ever again. Our Subscription Manager (Leatha Lockhart) has resigned due to health reasons. Irate subscribers calling and swearing at her and leaving threatening messages on the phone and by email has only exasperated the situation for her. It is not her fault the magazine was late coming out and the voices of a few caused us to lose a very good employee. Shame on those of you who did this, and you know who you are! To help solve this I am immediately disconnecting the phone and fax line that went into her office, as that is her home as well. NO ONE should have been subjected to what she endured in the last six months!
The rising Canadian/falling US dollar has cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars and our booking agency partners that were supposedly going to sell our excess hunt inventory did nothing at all, costing us much more.
All in all it has been a tremendous struggle and a secret to no one. Many other publications are facing the same difficulties we are right now. We are not alone in this struggle. We are seeking qualified investors and possibly buyers at this time to restructure BGA and to continue what we feel is the best hunting magazine in the world. We have three interested groups and we feel a sale is imminent to one of these three groups. Others may surface in the near future. We have turned down some buyers as they were not qualified and would have led to the failure of the company.
In the meantime please understand we have minimal staff and writing or calling to "check on my subscription or ad" is a complete waste of our time (and yours) right now. The magazine will be shipped out when it is done, either by present management, future management or new owners, or all three.
Please be patient and thanks in advance for your understanding. Compared to other true tragedies around the world (such as the fires in California at this time) not having a hunting magazine to read right now is a pretty minor event, so please keep that in perspective. None of us have lost our lives here, so lets remember this is not life or death OK? The strain of this had damaged the health of Keri, Leatha, Glenn and to a great extent myself, so we know the struggle more than anyone else can imagine. Stress is THE leading cause of cancer and to a great extent depression and bi-polar disorder so I am taking steps to eliminate this from the lives of these three people.
Thanks for your patience and understanding and we are doing all we can to get back to four issues per year as soon as possible. Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated at this time.
Sincerely,
Raymond F. Oelrich
Publisher and President"

Eastmans is pretty good, usually longer stories than muley crazy I think. My favorite magazine for deer though, is Big Buck Magazine. Mostly deer from Alberta and Saskatchewan, not many ads and lots of pictures.

They all have their strenghts but the one I most look forward to is Eastmans Bowhunting Journal. Cameron Hanes does a great job. Huntin Fool is also great and has tons of info but you pay for it.

Like BUCKSPY said, I'm just glad we have so many good mags to choose from. Used to be we were stuck with only a small generic section in Outdoor Life or Sports Afield about western hunting.

MULEY CRAZY ALL THE WAY!!!!! Muley Crazy is awesome Ryan Hatch, David Virotsko Etc, they always have some giants in their Magazine.

Remember this is the Mule Deer forum. Muley Crazy is #1 by a mile. I do like all the other mags mentioned also. The competition has definately improved them all!

Throw another vote out there for "Western Hunter." It's got some of the better how to articles out there for sure.

I really liked the bug eating article in this last issue.

Grasshoppers anyone?:)

Trophy hunter, muley crazy, and eastmans in that order. I've drooled over TH since junior high.

Kings and hunting illustrated look like amateur kids mags to me. They waste too much space with filler and ads and the editing is poor at best. Hire someone with a degree to check the articles for errors. Trophy hunter has a few errors, but not to the point where they distract from the article.

Eastmans Journal and Bowhunting Journal are great. I too have to say I really like Kings Hunting Illustrated and Muley Crazy is awesome too , but I really like seeing all types of big game.Trophy Hunter is good too , just can't find it anywhere...

I subscribe to MC, Eastman's and TH......but Playboy still has the best "soft" racks....and they are all does.

The only one I subscribe to is Muley Crazy.....And its ironic to see the bucks get just a little bit smaller year to year with a few exceptions.

I am a book nut I guess you could say, get a number of them monthly, quarterly etc.
Muley Crazy is probably the one I like of the major three mentioned above. But the one magazine I do wait for, quarterly is NNO.
This magazine is put out by the students of Winnemucca, NV High School and is quarterly and a very well done mag by "the students" covering a lot of NV and elsewhere at times.
It is titled, "Northern Nevada Outdoors".

If you get a chance pick up an issue of Real Hunting Magazine. I just did and it's a great magazine put together by a group of hunting buddies out of Montana.

Thanks for posting that BC, I found that quite amusing :)
Been a time or two I thought similarly bout my o'lady, usually around the end of the month.

Also, like you said Cohntr6, Kings Hunting Illustrated is not much more than their marketing arm for there Camo line.

I use to subscribe to them all, but anymore too many of the stories start out with

"I booked my hunt with so & so Outfitters...."

Just cant seem to get into that

That's what I like about Real Hunting Magazine, no guided hunts or auction tags.

-Lowedog

BFE,
I'm thinking that maybe the Fairchase gods are having some revenge. :) Lets hope the mag dies a fast and painless death. As for the staff, I wish them the best and hope they all heal up and enjoy their lives not hunting 'penned' bison anymore. :)

Prism, do you know where I can find this magazine. My dad saw it on his goat hunt and somehow a picture of me got into it back in August but I havent been able to find it anywhere.

I have subscribed to Eastmans bowhunting journal for years and probably won't renew my subscribtion next time. I like the stories but I get tired of the other sections. Every other section is just a regurgitation from all of their books. Most everyone has already read it! Then the page that they put in there called feedback that is just a bunch of letters saying how good the magazine is. What a wast of space, who cares. I don't need to read about how much everyone else likes the magazine. The MRS in the latest issue is completely worthless, first it tells you how to write a good story, then it tells you about tag services and how they are really expensive but are a good tool to have, and lastly more regurgitated material from Cameron's latest book. I mean the book was good but they're plugging it and re-plugging it to a point that it's just filler. Sorry for the rant, I'm just tired of Eastmans

I love the ones that are almost all stories. Like Muley Crazy and trophy hunter. They are almost the same but MC is all muleys. Eastmans is good but they are a little more flashy. Another one for good info is Rocky Mountain Game and Fish. It has a ton of info with stories but without all the flashy stuff. I dont really care for HI.

270,

I agree with you as I have been getting the Rocky Mtn Hunting & Fishing Mag for a long time now and it does have a lot of good info.

Brian

I like Muley Crazy and King's the best. I got turned off of Eastman's a little bit when guy went to Kansas and popped his big muley, after seeing on a webcam of all things, and call daddy Mike to see if it was OK to pay $10K to shoot him. Eastman's also uses the "no fences here" slogan, only to run a feature story on a Mexican mule deer some rich guy pops behind a high fence operation (never admitted it or mentioned it either). Just not sure about those guys anymore.

I really like the Eastman's Bowhunting Journal. There really is not a better Bowhunting mag out there! I love the DIY stories too.

Eastmans Hunting Journal, especially the DIY .Most of the other magazines only show the high dollar hunts that I will never be able to do,the DIY in Eastmans is something that Fits the working mans budget!

HuntinFool

It breaks down to $8 an issue. Where else can you network exactly what units to apply for, draw stats and get list and phone numbers to other hunters who are willing to point you in the right direction? Not to mention the lists of landowner tags, reduced price hunts, awesome gear reviews, and news from all the western states. I'll glady give up two magazines to afford the cost of the Huntinfool.

you can send your stories and pictures to muleycrazy and be in theirs so dont bag on them!

We really have it good in the way of off season mulie fix's these days. These mags are all excellent. My favorite for some time has been Trophy Hunter. That said, i just returned a borrowed copy of Hunting Fool to a buddy and i must admitt to being impressed though not ready, $100. p/year i believe, to sign up.

IMO, Eastmans is getting better. I'm seeing less and less of Mike who burns my behind in his Ego claiming ownership of the "way" my family and many others have been trophy hunting big blacktail & mule deer now for many generations.

Mulie Crazy and the rest are Solid, great mags well worth the $.

EBJ all the way! Their stories keep my interest.
MC is great but it's becoming more of a picture book only mag.
I take the Huntin' Fool mags when my Dad is done with them and use them for fire starters.

Eastman's both mags: no other mag has anything like there MRS section. Great stuff.

Here's my all-time fav.

4754966d55ec51ca.jpg

Both Eastmans are great magazines. I used to really like TH, but dropped it a couple years ago when I got fed up with their advertising canned hunts. Maybe they have changed?

Eastmans. They have put out more "How TO" information out there than anyone else. I love the DIY issues. fatrooster.

They all are fun to read but Eastmans HJ & BHJ is the pioneer in the Western hunting publications and still the front runner.

Anyone heard of or receive WESTERN HUNTER that is published in AZ??
Been getting it for about close to a year now, don't even know who sent it to me.

Not too bad with the stories but a lot of advertisements for gear etc.

Brian

Western hunter is good too I like the info and they also have a lot of product review stuff in it. Also they break down all the differences between optics and other gear.

Brian,
I also receive Western Hunter, don't know why? but not complaining.

Same with me, this latest issue is probably the third one now and they come out 4 per year. Don't know why I get it, thought my neighbor bought it for me but I asked her tonight and she said NO.

I always take free things and don't complain.

Brian

I bought a spotting scope from Outdoorsmans in AZ a few years back and have been getting the Western Hunter Mag ever since. I figured it was their version of a catelog.

The mag is ok but I really like the price.

EBJ and EHJ are my favs. They seem to be more oriented to my style of hunting that I do myself, and with family. Love the how to articles and the MRS. Like Huntin Fool also.

Agree w the comment about too many Mexico bucks in Muley Crazy. Other than that Ryan Hatch has a good format w the maps and the score and the specs. Rusty Hall at trophy hunter is legit too but could learn from muley crazy on the layout. The best thing about eastmans is cameron haines in the bow journal.

Another vote for Western Hunter!

Actually I buy Trophy Hunter, Eastmans (both versions), MC, and Huntin Fool. Each one is very unique and I enjoy them all. I have been editing Western Hunter for a few years now and try to make it as unique as possible so sportsmen can justify buying it and the others as well. Given the enourmous cost of hunting these days $16.95 for some good information and a well written story is a drop in the bucket.

I am glad to hear that you enjoy the book.
