Colorado Elk Slaying

What is the consensus on this? I am against poaching but found it sort of interesting that they are bringing in people to testify on the animals behalf. I know the good ole days are long gone but this sounds more like California mentality (no offense), more so then fighting poaching.

What did you expect. What would have happened in any town where a wild animal is seen as a town pet and people have "personnal" relationship with the animal.

What would have happened if this was the cemetary buck, or one of the many other animals that are relatively tame and living in town. The whole damn thing a joke. They guy did it, he should be fined and pay the price.

The bigger issue for me is that this was an on-duty, uniformed officer. I am one to go to bat for the police as quickly as anyone. But if what he is accused of is true I hope they throw the book at this guy. Where much power is given, much responsibility and accountability should be demanded.

More points I agree with, and don't get me wrong I am not against people being pissed off about this as I am ticked about it also. However is there really a place for someone to testify on the elks behalf at trial? I don't see that as doing anything to win or loose the case. I could see them testifying at the sentencing stage but at trial its a mute point and should be objected to because its not a fact of the case. I could care less if its a elk in the wild or a city elk, poaching is poaching, and this man covered it up while on duty. Those facts right there should be enough, shouldn't they? I just don't want to hear a year from now that this joker got a appeal granted due to the people testifying on behalf of the elk, when they did not witness the crime take place.

All I will say about your concerns about appeals and who testified about what is the media doesn't have a clue. They might get it right, but usually don't.

What Elkgun said, the guy needs to go down and considering these elk witnesses did not witness the crime they should be left out until sentencing to avoid an appeal. Do you really want this guy to get off based on a technicality? Leave the facts for the jury and the sob story for the judge after, the facts show he is guilty!
