I drew an Antlerless tag for Central Manti. My plan is to hunt rifle season from Skyline down towards Scofield Res. I'll be Backpacking in. Is it worth it to pick up a Spike tag?

If you find cows, you may very well find a spike or two hanging behind them. Question is, do you want to pack out two elk? Or do you want the spike to show the "trophy"??

My son has the same cow tag for the Central Manti, and I'm not bothering picking up a spike tag for myself as is let alone a spike tag for him. One elk in the freezer is enough.

If you are hunting alone I would never get a spike tag. Now if you have a party of dudes ready to haul that elk out for you, sure! Otherwise there's a chance you would waste meat and be unable to get it all out in time if you had two whole elk down.

Backpacking for a cow? Considering a spike? You've got more leg than I have. You'll see plenty of elk. Opening morning is insanity on that unit with all the cow tags. Elk running everywhere and more gunshots than WWII. If you can pack and need all the meat get the tag.

"I'll see you all this coming fall in the Big Rock Candy Mountains!"

Check the map, the area you are talking about hunting is not in your tag area. That is part of the Central Mountains North Manti unit not the Central Manti unit. Only reason I know is I drew the North Manti tag 2 years ago and that is exactly where I shot my elk.

If you want one or the other its prob a good idea. My uncle had a cow tag up there and the other people in our group has spike tags and it was either they saw cows but no spikes or me and my uncle saw spikes but no cows. Be prepared for A LOT of people! It sounds like a war opening morning! Good luck

Good heads up! I just got a little lazy posting I guess. My tag is Central Mntns-North Manti 4022. I like to donate meat to needy familys when I hunt. So, my plan would be to take either a cow or spike and donate the meat, then go back and hunt the second elk.

Not a bad idea. There are usually quite a few spikes down in there. You will run into lots of people. Especially at the fish creek trail head. I will have 5 horses up there during that hunt hauling out elk for people. If you get elk down and want help with horses call me. Message me and I will get you contact info.
